Two stories of New Jersey. What a State.
« on: November 30, 2010, 06:57:27 PM »
Gov. Christie has his hands full, when dealing with people in this state.

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20101130_Family__New_Jersey_man_serving_7_years_for_guns_he_owned_legally.html

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/11/30/newark-undergoes-largest-police-layoff-in-decades/

First story deals with a man, with no previous record, LEGALLY purchased pistols from Bass Pro, stored locked and unloaded in his trunk, serving 7 years for weapons charges. :o

The second is NJ's largest city, Newark, laying off 14% of it's Cops, but assures concerned citizens, "all is well"....

So, shaft the gunowner, who followed the law. Enable criminals to have it easier committing crimes.

Perhaps the NJ members can shed some "light" on what seems like a dark time in NJ.
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Than why isn't it in the article??? The anti-gun press of NJ would have dumpster dove for dirt on this guy. Where is it?

I guess redeeming one's reputation as a prosecuter, after having oral sex with bovine's, is more important. There is certainly MORE to that story than this guy.

There probably IS more to the story, and the reason it isn't in the article is that the police didn't release the info or the reporter was too lazy to look up the facts (gee...that's never happened before...)
First off, hollow points are NOT illegal in NJ. You can own them and shoot them, you just can't shoot a person with them. Only cops can do that.
Second, he bought his guns in Colorado which has different laws...an M&P 9 comes with a 17 round mag...illegal in NJ where 15 rounds is max, so I guess that was the "high capacity magazines".

And yes, they are laying off cops but with all due respect, a few dozen less cops in Newark isn't going to make that much of a difference. It's still a s***hole. If you ADD a thousand cops it would still be a s***hole.

NJ is THE most restrictive state for gun laws. This is nothing new, but this guy appears to have been transporting guns in an illegal fashion even if he owned them. Overall it's bad and restrictive, but under the circumstances it sounds like he wasn't legal. In NJ you have to have a firearms ID card to own a gun. He didn't have one.

It sucks, it's probablly unjust, and yes, in NJ our rights are definitely "infringed", but that's the deal. You come here, you have to watch what you do.

Hey Jaybet, what if I have guns in my RV and I get stopped driving through NJ?  Can I even drive through that state without fear of becoming a resident in one of your gray-bar hotels?  My mobile cache would include a Glock 27, an AR15 with several 30-round magazines, and an assortment of pistols and lever guns.  I'm just curious.

In theory, the McClure Volkmer Act (sic?) says that as long as you are in transit from one state to another and your firearm is legal in the state of origin and the state of destination, you can posses it unloaded. In real life? Who the heck knows.

Perhaps the City wants to reclaim their title as "Crime Capital Of The Nation" from St. Louis.
I love waking up every morning knowing that Donald Trump is President!!

Suppposedly there's a federal law that allows "pass through" type activity based on your state of origin and destination. I'm no attorney, but I wouldn't chance it. If you've got an AR that isn't NJ legal and the 30 rd mags are DEFINITELY not legal, at the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM you're going to spend some time in one of our lovely facilities while it gets straightened out, assuming it does get straightened out and you don't go before one of our "second cousin Billy Bob" or "Soprano" judges. (Don't get me wrong...I know some good judges too).

Drive around... Jersey isn't that big, and unless you're in the bottom 1/3 of the state or the top left corner, the scenery is much better going around, even on I 95 going past Wilmington and Philly.

MB has commented on this on the podcast a couple times, Some places, specificly NY, Boston and Chicago do not abide by federal law. His specific example was flying legally with guns that were legal at the start point, and legal at your destination, your plane is diverted to one of those cities and you have to change planes, you may be arrested for violating their anti gun laws despite the federal law .

I agree with driving around Jersey, however, if your journey is the New England states, there is NO WAY around New York.  I drove through NY last year with my 1911 in the trunk, I can carry in PA because of my NH permit but not NY.  I just stayed at the speed limit and didn't do anything stupid.  I was legal but I didn't take any chances.

Hell, even MA will let a visitor drive through with a handgun unloaded and locked away in the trunk of the car as long as it's legal in his or her home state.  The same thing goes with the 30 round mags though, leave them home and buy some 10 rounders.

My Kingdom for 50 state reciprocity....sigh!
