Arming Your Automobile ??
« on: December 01, 2010, 01:16:15 PM »
Do you guys simply rely on your carry piece? Or do you outfit them separately? I don't always carry and neither does Mel. We keep weapons in the car, knives, clubs, and sometimes guns. Mel doesn't work and I don't have issues with anyone breaking into my car or truck at work. The possibilities are endless. AK-47's under the seat. Handguns dedicated to certain vehicles.

Going to the store she carries. I'm one of those "sometimes guys". I should carry all of the time, and so should she. We're trying to work that out, but quite honestly I'm not sure on what to do and neither is she. You hate to go unprotected for fear of what might happen. But at the same time being around weapons you can retrieve in an instant is tough, if not a total PITA. What do you guys do? It only takes once and a bad situation can screw up your life.   Bill T.

Most of the time I rely on the carry gun.
Someitmes on longer (out to the desert) runs I wlll put a larger handgun in the vehicle besides what I'm going to shoot anyway. On trips I like to have a 'road warrior' gun, usually a short 12g pump along with the other handguns.

I can't dedicate a handgun to the vehicle because I can't park my truck inside this short tract home garage. I keep a knife in the vehicle, but I've had 2 ASP batons stolen and never used either one for its intended purpose.

I have changed from an 'always carry' to a 'sometimes guy' myself. I'm currently in always mode but that can change with the breezes.
My Glock 27 is easy enough to carry but the wifes LCP is REALLY easy to carry when you don't feel like hauling around a gun.
I think we might need another one.

On edit: one thing I ALWAYS have is a Benchmade automatic in my pocket.

NJ- can't carry. There's a 16" collapsible baton in the door compartment in both our cars.

Storing weapons, especially firearms in an automobile is not a good idea.  They are up for grabs for any drugged up car prowler who happens to be working the area where it is parked.  The drugged up car prowler then becomes an armed drugged up car prowler.   Over the span of my police career I have taken countless reports of cars broken into where guns were taken.  Once on the streets, they become a threat to us all.  Although not the primary purpose for breaking in, it becomes a target of opportunity.

Normal day, its always my carry gun and my Gerber blade in my pocket... Everyday all day!!

Depending on the road trip, I add to the automobile. .357 mag... .223 Bushmaster and 12ga are the three that I use.

+1 on not leaving guns in cars!

There are very few times that I don't have my EDC with me but sometimes it has to be left behind, so I keep my FNP-9 in the glove box.  I am very religious about unlocking the glove box when I get in the car and re-locking it when I get out.  My car is always locked - even in the garage.  Most all car break-ins I've seen have been "smash 'n grabs" so I have nothing in sight to tempt them - no phones, ipods, cds, backpacks, etc. - nothing.   A friend has had her car broken into three times but it looks like she live out of her car so I can understand how someone would think there was something worth stealing in it.

My biggest problem is remembering to take it out when I'm going someplace (like a local military base) where it would be frowned upon.  On a recent road trip to Illinois I was about a block from the house when I remembered it and turned around to put it in the safe.  On the same trip, I was about half way through Illinois when I remembered that I had a 1911 on my hip.  That could have extended my stay way longer than planned.   :(   I hate strongly dislike that state.

We don't "store" them in our vehicles. But I'm not against leaving them in them in the car in the garage, providing it isn't Summer and 120 degrees inside the car and garage either. Those kind of temps play hell on ammo and Polymer guns. We have security guards at work, and no one can get to employee vehicles. Bill T.

Solid agreement from this Rabbit about guns in cars.  That said, I'm heading out west over the Christmas holiday and I will carry my Glock 27 concealed on my belt until I get to AZ, then I will substitute one of my .357 mag 6-shooters, and the G27 will go in a locked box.  I will also have my .357 mag carbine, and many rounds of ammo.  They will have to accompany me in the car, but will linger with me in any motel room I happen to find along the way.  Of course, the chances of my car being stolen with me in it are decidedly remote.  Once I get to AZ, the G27 stays locked in my parents' house while I head west because California thinks it's an assault weapon.  I won't carry concealed in CA, but I will have my .357 mag nearby.  Still illegal, but less likelihood of stimulating an arrest from over-zealous law enforcement.

I don't believe that you should arm your automobile, that should be on you.  There are some good in vehicle options for holsters, so that may be something to look at, but for me that would mean removing it from my side as I entered the vehicle.  Depending on a particular trip we may choose to upgrade what is carried in the vehicle, and that would be in a case in the back.

Pocket pistol, or my more comfortable IWB snubbie, or other compacts, for trips to the local places.

Never left in the car overnight . However, I drive a work van with a drilled and tapped metal lock box in between the seats. It is like an ammo can with a stouter lid and key lock. I keep a pistol in there, unlock it when driving, lock it on service calls, van also has an alarm.

Generally, the shipyards, and marinas have gated security, it's the surrounding ghettos and industrial parks, that I drive through when I unlock the box, and keep it close.

In Riviera Beach, I even tuck it under my work shirt to get parts, re-fuel, etc,... It's a bad neighborhood.
