SALT LAKE CITY -- Soldiers used it in both World Wars and gun enthusiasts say it has defended American values, but does that mean the Browning 1911 handgun, designed by Ogden native John Browning, deserves a spot as Utah's state firearm? The idea is getting mixed reviews.

--SNIP--

Steve Gunn, with the Gun Violence Prevention Center, said, "I would prefer that if we adopt a firearm as our symbol, that we use something more modern like a .50 caliber sniper rifle or perhaps an assault rifle."

It's a sarcastic response to the idea of a state firearm from a man concerned about gun violence. Rep. Carl Wimmer, (R) Herriman,is serious about elevating this historic, semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun, though.

"This is not an implementation of death, this is an implementation of freedom. This is the firearm that helped win World War II, that helped win World War I and defend American values," Wimmer said.

You owe me a new keyboard Haz! I'll never get the coffee out of it. Bastard! ;D Honestly, even the Brady Bunch in Salt Lake seem to have a sense of humor. Maybe Bringham Young brandishing an an AK on the state flag? I am ROFL. I love my Glock, but I would be proud to live in a state that designated the 1911 as "the official state gun". What has me almost peeing myself laughing is thinking about how the international press is going to report this. The Brits will have a heart attack. I absolutely love it! ;D

This is prejudicial crap, it verges on RACISM !

The 1911 was only in service for about 75 years, JMB designed the M-2 .50 Cal and it' still in service after nearly 90 years.

But I can easily own a 1911 and I would bet 100 to 1 that there are a whole buckin funch more 1911s around than there are M2s.

What would the "National" Firearm be?

Colt Peacemaker
30/30 Winchester
M1 Garand
AR/M16

Just curious, if UT wants the state gun to be a 1911 fine,  The Country should vote on one also.
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

The "National" firearm should b the 1911 also. …or the AR to help make it seem more acceptable (ie: "as American as mom, apple pie and the AR.", "…an AR in every pot").

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

I would suggest we start in 1776 with a flintlock rifle, and chose one top firearm for each twenty-five year period up to the present.  Then chose the #1 National from that list.

Regardless of which firearms make the list or which is the final "top gun," John Moses Browning needs to be the number one influence on firearms in our history.  I know there have been many greats, but with just the 1911 look what JMB did.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

The national firearm should be a revolutionary flintlock.

Ga = Glock, of course, since they're headquartered here.
FL = Kel-Tec?  a number of other companies....anybody remember Winslow?
SC = FN FAL  or any other FN firearm made there
Will work for ammo
