Now this is respect.
« on: December 30, 2010, 05:53:03 PM »
Me and the wife were at a local burger joint.  The place is PACKED, I mean like the fire marshel is going to close it down packed.

In comes this elderly couple, late 70s-early 80s.  He is in a wheel chair and  dressed up in his army uniform from the korean war era.  They clearly had just come from a funeral( there is a big place about 1/2 mile from this burger joint that does alot of miltary funerals)   There is a army and marine officer eating lunch( the recuriting station is about 300 yds away).  They are no where close to finished eating, but they stood up and offer the table to this couple.  They help both of them get into the booth.  They also go and get thier order when called.  I then hear a ATTENTION!  There they stood saluting the older gentelmen.  The old vet who remember was in a wheel chair, raised up out of the booth, It was clearly not easy and he was struggling, But he returned the salute.  The recuiting officers helped him back down, he was clearly tearing up.

Now that my friends is respect.

Great story!

I was at the "hippie" market picking up my wifes toffuti, soy, cheeze substitute food stuff after work today and there was an older gent wearing a VFW cap buying his supplements.  I thanked him for his service and even the four hippies in line and the counter clerk responded in kind.

The old fella left the store beaming!   ;D

I always wear my NRA cap when I go into the store!

I make it a point to speak to Veterans when I run into them, but I make a special effort with the "older" guys.

From fellow military personnel and civilians alike, every Veteran, let alone in uniform, deserves it.

The "older" Veterans, leaving us by the day, need to understand that we are a grateful nation for their sacrifice, duty, and defense of this country.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

I don't go to local parades any more.
What finished it for me was when the Local Scout commander didn't even stop his phone conversation when the Flag passed .  >:(

Tab, Yes Sir. " now that my friends is respect."  Thanks for putting that out. It is hard for me to show respect sometimes, not out of disrespect, I just don't wan't to get  allergies, and look stupid. I may need Haz to come down here and slap the s__t out of me, looks my father in law is bad shape, and may not be around much longer, Korean Vet, ran a prison, since he was smart and could speak spanish, If can make a copy of the picture, he was in the 1st Nato unit, made up of Americans, Turks, British and Assuies. Really impressive black and white pic. I would rather eat on the porch steps, than not give my seat to someone who served.

TAB, thank you.
With all that is wrong with what we are experiencing, it is great to see some of what we (I) feel is great about this country and its people.

Thanks TAB.
I was talking to an old vet before I started doing a gig. He had seen my band play a benefit at the local VFW. I don't know about others, but this one supports itself through "associate members" who join for the cheap drinks. He suggested that I join the club and I told him that I had never served and I didn't feel right about the associate membership. Pressing further I explained to him that I will ALWAYS be a guest in a VFW, and I think it's disrespect to think otherwise. He seemed happy about that.

It's not always on your mind, but the service is always there. We wouldn't have what we have without it.
I got the blues as my companion.
