Lets see, a partially assembled bolt firing a hot Weatherby magnum round? Yeah, that could be bracing.
Stil, it can't be that much of an issue if we are hearing about it 17 years after the fact. If folks were blowing themselves up left, right and center, I'm sure we would have heard about it.

It's not the sort of rifle that most people would allow to accumulate much dirt. I would bet that rough conditions, dirt mud that sort of thing, make it far more likely. That was why the Canadian Ross, straight pull bolt action got such a bad rap.
Before WWI they used it to kick every ones but in competition, but it could be fired without the bolt being fully locked forward, dirty conditions in the trenches led to them not always locking and cost several Canadian soldiers their lives before they were pulled from service.
As I understand it the Swiss K-31, also a straight pull design,
will not fire unless the bolt is fully locked.
