Rimfire scout rifle?
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:37:43 PM »
I've always liked the advise that you should have a rimfire the same as your centerfire for pracitce and learning.

With that in mind, I think Ruger should come out with a .22 version of their new scout rifle.  I think it would sell well.

Just don't call it the Mini Cooper.

You beat me to the mini-cooper comment. I had it all warmed up when I saw the thread title too. Jerk. LOL! ;D Still, here, I think it does sound like a cool concept if it was offered at .22 prices like say $250 or so to start, with things like H-bars moving upwards. Just throw in a standard 10/22 mag. It could be a lot of fun for rimfire challenge type shooting, a good bolt to start a kid with, and be a lot of fun for small game. Hell, if I liked it, I might even be persuaded to buy the grown up version. Plus, as you say, it would be a great practice weapon. I think there might be a market, particularly since everyone and their dog makes a "tactical" .22. This would be something new and relatively cheap to make. Pass on the word MB?

This can already be done on a 10/22, more than one scope mount maker, makes a weaver rail that is extended and uses the factory holes on the receiver and you remove the rear sight to extend the rail to an acceptable length to mount a pistol scope, Tasco used to make some excellent 30mm low power pistol scopes that work great.

It would be the bolt that would attract me, particularly if I were getting it for a kid. Personally, I'd be inclinded to consider one, as I like bolts for target shooting  and hunting (of course they'd have to make a LH model. :-\). As far as sales go, it seems like it would be a "cool new thing" in a market oversaturated with tacti-cool clones.  A good honest bolt action with fast target accquistion is a refreshing change. I still have my doubts about relying on one as my go-to SD rifle, but for a .22? Sign me up.

Agreed that I'd take a bolt over the 10/22.

I've got one of the Savage LH bolt action rifles in .17HMR. they make the same rifle in 22mag and 22LR. It has a 16" barrel (heavy barrel but you could have it contoured down easy enough). I've thought about rigging up some type of scout scope mount. I've really been bitten by the scout bug. I took my Savage 308 LH bolt rifle and rigged up a scout mount for it. The barreled action is off right now getting cut down to 16" then re-crowned and threaded. I'm planning on running the XS ghost ring sights as well as a 2X red dot on it. The only non-scout thing about it will be the fact that it doesn't have the detachable mag but with no scope over the action I can reload it pretty quickly. I'll post some pics when it's al done.

This thread brings to mind William Ruger's beliefs and makes me wonder "what if" he still ran the show today.

Mr. Ruger was known to tell anyone that asked, cared, worked there, or just happen to be around that Ruger did not need focus groups.  They were all gun guys, and if they did not know what the shooting public wanted they had lost touch with their passion.

In this age of high priced ammunition would Mr. Ruger have marketed a package that included a gun, and a matching .22 rimfire gun for cheap practice?
