Hornady XTP, 45ACP Question
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:50:34 PM »
A local gun shop here in S. Fl, has a once a month "meetup", where ammo, accessories, parts, and other "gun stuff", is bought, sold, traded, etc,... Good folks, the grill is lit, burgers and brats.

Either way, Hornady 45Auto, 200gr. XTP ammo, was a steal. So I bought two boxes... I usually carry, or keep Federal HST 230gr. JHP's. I have shot the Federals, and have no issue's of any kind in my S&W 1911, or G21.

QUESTION(S):
Anyone else shoot it? Like it? Don't Like it? Feeds good? Ejects good? Accuracy good? How about at some distance,,, say 25yds...

I know Hornady makes very good ammo. I was just inquiring as to anyone's personal exp. Sorry for the fuzzy pics...

Federal has the silver case.

Federal on the right. Larger HP.

So, the box states, 900 fps at the muzzle, 856 fps at 50 yds, and 817 fps at 100. I know the 45 is a big, "slow" bullet.

But the ballistics are almost identical with a 230gr bullet. (maybe splitting hairs, even with the 185gr),... I'm sure any zombie won't be able to tell the difference. It was a great price.

Thank you for any input.

I've used both and have no probs with either one.  I have found that "some" Federal HydraShok rounds will have a problem with a 1911 that has a sharp ramp, but generally work just fine.

I run 185gr. in my carry gun that boasts a 1170fps. velocity, and find them to be more accurate than match ammo!

XTP is very accurate.  A lot of people use the bullets (which are sold seperately) in diff. cals to reload match ammo.  Feed and function great.

I love the NEW Hornady .45 long Colt personel protection (hollow point with red plug) round in my Taurus Judge SSR. Not only is it a perfect defense round, the bright red tip looks bad ass in the cylinder.

Agreed, the 200gr XTP is good ammo.  I shoot it, and other Hornady ammo.

sounds like the Critical Defense product and it appears to be very good.

Welcome aboard.

Take care.

I use to carry the XTP rounds for my 1911 as well but I've since switched to the new Critical Defense 45ACP 185gr FTX for my new G21

I have not fired these but use Hornady TAP and Critical Defense in all my firearms with the exception of my shotguns. Love the Lightfield Slugs.

I used hornaday taps in my 1911 for a year. A few months ago I tried a box of Fiochi Extrema which used the FTX bullet. I found the Fiochi to just be a hair cleaner and faster so I stuck with that. There is no way you are going to go wrong with a either, enjoy and shoot straight.  ;D
