Ruger mini 14 mags and rust

I own both Ruger mini 14 and mini 30. The problem I have with these two carbines is the factory mags tend to rust all the time. What should I do?

Got the same issue.  I just wipe them down with the rifle, real light coat of oil.

I just read the Pistolsmithing column by Alex Hamilton in the latest issue of American Handgunner and after 42 years in the business, he advises using Birchwood Casey RIG grease for rust prevention. He said to let a cotton patch absorb the grease and then give a wipe-down of blued parts. Been using it myself for 20+ years to great effect. A little goes a long way.

I use Rem-oil but it seems to always come back.

WD 40 is OK for non moving parts, in fact it is perfect for this application. (on the out side, it will gum up the inside of the mag )
But what I use is BreakFree, inside and out.

I like FP10 and Birchwood Casey Sheath, or really good stuff like corrosion x, the mini 14 mags are not military grade and do not have a phosphate finish.

Exactly. In fact if you check the results of this rust test done by Brownells, WD-40 (last product tested) scored at or near the top for preventing rust. I buy the stuff in gallon cans from Home Depot.  Bill T.

WD 40 was developed to displace water.  it works very well for that purpose, not much else, but for that purpose its great.
