I have been teaching the use of the kalashnikov platform for six years now.  I could say we were shooting AKs when AKs weren't cool.  But today, the AK has become america's second rifle.  At SHOT, I saw almost as many AKs as M4 clones.  Along with a copy of the M4 and 1911, SIG is coming out with an AK.  Even those who have denigrated the AK are realizing that whether they like it or not, the AK is here to stay.

While I am an advocate of leaving the operating controls of the rifle, such as the safety lever, the bolt handle, the magazine release and locking method alone, I admit that the weapon, like any weapon, can be made better.  One of these areas of improvement has been the ability to mount optical sights.  An AK devotee has had few choices.  The forward mounted optics offered by the Ultimak or the Midwest Industries handguard models work great in the CQB environment and have proven themselves in battle and on ranges around the world.

Optics? Rails? Make an AK better?
IT'S AN AK FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!

Geez, build it, keep it sloppy, don't "refine" it....That's like saying, "I'm going to make a gas economical 69 Camaro SS Big Block."

Stop It. Outside of a bayonet lug. OE is what makes the AK,...the AK....

Sheesh....

I strongly disagree. At 150 yards and under, the AKs forte, its darn hard to beat a red dot. Yeah, I'll mock a scope on one, but an eotech? In what way is that not an improvement?

Meh...

The AKs ergos are so horrible that it makes me overlook its qualities.  For an "AK-like" experience, without the crappy aftertaste, I prefer something like the VZ58 or the Galil or even the new SIG 556R (by the way, what convoluted marketing type made up that name?)

It's like saying a Colt SAA needs improvement.

It became an American legend because of it's simplicity.

An AK, received the Military Channel's #1 Combat rifle status, because of its history and simplicity....

Want something else? Get something else. Plenty of other options.

Remember.....It's an AK..... sand, mud, abuse, lack of maint., clean with boot laces, use motor oil, keep it simple stupid.

OBTW, it's an AK.....

keep the tweaks off it. For those with so much time on their hands to make an AK tack driver, for $1500+ great ......

I like mine the way it is. "Zombie slayer", damn simple, whoop ass rifle.......keep the bells and whistles off of it.

Remember. When your AR breaks, it takes a gunsmith to make it right.

When an AK breaks, primitive tools and a steel toed boot gets it back in action.

What a dumb azz. He's unworthy enough to be a dumocrat.  ::)
Not to mention that the 47 was phased out during the 80's and replaced with the AK-74 which is being phased out for the "Helical feed " Bizon.

???  The Bizon is a pistol caliber sub-gun.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. I'm not sure either if these were improvements. Going to to a flatter shooting light round only makes sense if the accuracy supports it. The AK platform, in whatever chambering does not. It's a 100-200 yard gun. The 7.63x39 is ideal. It is relatively light weight and packs a lot of punch. I would take an AK 47 over an AK 74 any day even if the weapon and a lifetime supply of ammo were free. For a close, quick and dirty rifle it is hard to beat. I love my AR, but honestly, I could have it replaced with an AK by the gun fairy tonight and I wouldn't bitch. Its a great weapon. I still think a red dot is a great addition to any short to medium range rifle, but then my eyes aren't what they used to be either. Regardless, its a classic for a reason.
