And the Gun Control Push is on
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:09:08 AM »
As I've said before, the "Gun Control Loophole" is an attack on the FIRST Amendment.

Quote
"............or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,...."

What "they" want is control.  To control all gun transfers, but they'll attack the First Amendment to get there.    If they get "gun shows", and the definition is very slippery, then they'll go after "advertising".  Anything to prevent gun transfers (sales) or to control them.  To make the process onerous.  And if there is collateral damage, people indited who innocently fail to follow the law, they see that as a necessary cost to their end.

Dear MoveOn member,

The tragedy in Tucson has brought to light some glaring holes in our gun
control system.

Thousands of the records that should be in the background check
system--people with documented histories of serious mental illness and
drug abuse, like Arizona shooter Jared Lee Loughner--have never been
entered.1 And you can still buy guns at gun shows with no background check
at all.2

A bipartisan group of mayors from across the country, led by New York
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is now pushing to close these loopholes.

There is huge public support (over 90%!) for doing this3--but the gun
lobby and the NRA are powerful and super well-funded and they will fight
this tooth and nail. If we can show overwhelming public demand for the
mayors' efforts right now, change is possible.

Can you sign this petition to Congress supporting the bipartisan proposal
from Mayors Against Illegal Guns? If we can get over 250,000 signatures,
mayors from across the country will deliver them directly to Congress.

After the tragic mass shooting at Virginia Tech in 2006, Congress passed
the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Improvement
Act that created incentives for states to improve the reporting of
background information to the NICS database. While it helped (increased
the number of records in the database from 300,00 to 1.1 million), the
database is still over a million records short. Here are some key facts:4

    * Twenty-eight states and D.C. still have less than 100 mental health
records in the system, in part because this bill was underfunded.
    * The database only has 2,000 people listed as drug abusers--something
that Jared Lee Loughner should have been listed as and would have
prevented him from getting the gun he used.
    * Under this law, federal agencies--including the military--which
rejected Loughner due to drug use should have been sharing that
      information with the NICS database.
    * Finally, even if the Arizona shooter had failed the NICS background
check, he could have walked right into a gun show and bought a gun
      without any check at all.

The mayors effort focuses on two major components: Fully fund the NICS
Improvement Act and strengthen procedures for compliance with the law, and
fix the gun show loophole by requiring reasonable background checks at gun
shows.

Their proposals are supported by more than 90% of the public, including
gun owners.

But the NRA is incredibly powerful and has a lot of allies in Congress.
They've prevented important reforms like this before and they could again,
unless we all speak out now.

It needs one caveat - the shooters have all been democrats (liberal nuts) so this should only apply to liberals. I think it is time for us to petition a total repeal of all gun laws, disbanding of the ATF ( ..xyz whatever they are now) & a return to the Constitution as written!!

We also need to revive the Committee for UnAmerican Activities & start chasing all these commies out of this country - starting with BHo & his minions, Soros, Bloomberg etc.  Can you say McCarthy ???

BUZZZZ.

It was the committee "ON" not "for".  It was a House of Rep committee, and McCarthy was a senator.

McCarthy was not part of the HCUA (or sometimes the HUAC)  He was a Senator.  He refused to release his list of communists, but was forced to by senators sympathetic with the communists and the president.   All he wanted was for the White House, the Military and the State Department to develop better procedures to insure those serving did not have their loyalties to some other government.   He did not want a witch hunt.   Declassification of FBI and military documents from the 40s and 50s have revealed that McCarthy was correct.   People actually on Stalin's payroll were making important decisions within the state department and slanting reports to show favor to Mao and Stalin.

I have bought a few guns at gun shows, and I have had to go through the background check EVERYTIME.

I want to know where these shows are at that don't require a background check.

God grant that I may not be found wanting,

JC, they are talking about purchases from individuals. There is no requirement for them to go through NICS.

The problem I'm having with this is: On one hand the "system" is broken because everybody they feel unworthy of purchasing a firearm is not included on a banned list, but even though it is broken, we should use it even more to keep evil guns off of the street. Don't get me wrong, some people shouldn't be allowed to purchase firearms (mentally ill, felons, etc.), but that should be decided and instituted in an open and appealable manner.

I'm leery about the "drug abusers" bit too. Granted we don't want crackheads buying guns. But does that mean if you were busted for possesion 20 years ago you're DQed? What if you told an army recruiter that you smoked pot ten years ago and weren't accepted? Mentioned past drug abuse to a doctor (those forms aren't as piviledged as you think)? Ever been to an AA meeting, or have a ten year old DUI? It seems this is a pretty elastic DQ that can cover a whole lot of folks that are perfectly safe.

Since when was a gun show the ONLY place to get a gun without a background check?

Please, the underground black market gun trade, will only get worse.

"After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it."
William Burroughs

"Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun."
OldNoob

"Anti-gun politicians don't want women to have a gun and to use that gun to protect themselves from an ex boyfriend or husband who beats the hell out of her. They say "An order of protection will protect you" That is the most asinine statement anyone could say to a bruised woman with black eyes, broken nose and teeth knocked out."
PackinMama

"Because the state can no longer protect us from crime, it wants to take away from us the means of protecting ourselves. This is the logic of gun control."
Joe Sobran
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
