I wonder, do recruiters still lie through their teeth when trying to get some kid to enlist?

I certainly had no idea what my rate was back in the 70's.  I was told I was going to be an oceanographer.  It didn't turn out that way...

My recruiter never lied to me.  He did, I found out, leave a lot of stuff out though.

I doubt my recruiter had a clue what an OT did back in 75.  The rate was top secret, the stations were remote and we didn't, for the most part, serve our sea duty aboard ship.  About as far off the beaten track as I could have gone in the Navy.

The stations were nice, Bermuda, Barbados, Antigua, Grand Turk, Cape Hatteras, Lewes, Nantucket, Hawaii, Point Sur, N. California, Coos Bay, Wales, Newfoundland, Iceland, Adak, Midway......sounded like a Cruise ship itinerary...

That one is almost as bad as when they (very briefly) used the Village People's "In the Navy" on one of their ads.  It'll be pretty hard to beat that low mark.   

Maybe, what with the repeal of DADT, they should bring the Village People and their song back. It may up the enlistments? ? ? ?

I think that after the initial excitement about the repeal of DADT, the poofs will lose interest in the Military and find another area of life to bitch about.  Is there anything left?

They now have federal protection for most everything while we white, middle aged, middle class men in the minority, have nothing but our work ethic to help us...

Thing is, there is little better than a stint of military discipline to instill that work ethic in anybody. Duty, teamwork and just getting a job done. I think the average gay person, assuming they aren't harrassed and ostracized, will come out of a military hitch with a much smaller chip on their shoulder. They'll be in an environment where you get judged on how well you work with the team. If they pull their weight they shoud (hopefully) be part of the team with nothing worse than a few jokes. Just like women and blacks, you rarely see veterans leading the grievance groups. Just a thought.

As previously stated, they are trying to get buy-in from young folks.  The Marines use the human chessboard and dragonslaying in their commercials.  I'm not saying it's right; I'm just saying it is.  

Recruiters have a product to sell.  Caveat emptor applies.  

Tom--141's have been gone since '06.

I got out in 80, all I know is my ass didn't get barbecued .
