How do dogs know?

Ok, I am officially flummoxed. Today was my dog's annual veterinary exam/shot day. Now, I don't take the dog to the vet, the vet comes to the dog. My guy quit his regular practice and now makes house calls for the same price he used to charge. He  saves a ton of money on no overhead. He just farms out the lab work and rents acess to a sugery.
Anyway, the doorbell rings. Normally, the dog is fierce. But I swear, today? She was cowering so far under the bed I had to drag her sorry self out. How did she know? All she heard was a knock, and she's off like shot looking like she was going to be sold to a Korean rather than getting some blood work, a shot and an exam. This mystifies me. If we had this level of situational awareness, we wouldn't need guns.

As you can see, I have Labs.  Their sense of smell, as with most dogs, is 100,000 times stronger than ours.  They also go off of you and your reactions, they might pick up something in the way you were acting that was exactly the way they see when your dog visits the Vet.  My bet would be on the scent of the Vet triggered that reaction.  My free opinions are worth every cent ;-)

My Dad used to have Malamute/wolf sled dogs and an 1800 foot drive way.
If strangers, or people who only visited rarely turned up the road they would bark before we heard a vehicle, but if it was a frequent visitor they would give one or 2 woofs and go back to what they were doing.
But when the Old Man turned onto the road they would start yapping and raising hell  till he went around and made of each of them

Heck, I can smell the vet.  That cleaner/antiseptic has a pretty unique odor.

I had a poodle that I took with me to the hardware store for 14 years.  ours is an old 100 yr old original general store layout where there is a crows nest at the top for the bookkeeper.. Taffy would lay up there sound asleep in her bed and when our vet opened the door which was a very long way from where she was.. she would stand straight up and all 6# of her would bark non stop.. Never ever barked at a customer.. just the vet.. She could smell her I am sure.

My parents were keeping my Terrier mixed dog because I couldn't have her in my apartment.  I would go to visit Wed afternoon before I hit the indoor shooting range.  One day at the range I cut myself bad enough to need to go to the ER for a Tetnis (SP?) shot.  Thought I'd swing by my parents on my way home  to let them know what happened.  They asked me when I left the hospital for their place.  The time just happened to coincide with when Missy became very nervous and anxious.  Seems she knew I was coming back.
