Found a new gunpusher/range!
« on: January 28, 2011, 03:57:11 PM »
Its rare to hear good gun news out of Palm Beach County, but I've got some! A small state chain called Shoot Straight is opening a franchise next week. Their gun prices are good, basically net prices plus a bit, but minus the shipping, and you can bring your own ammo. I feel like doing the snoopy dance over the last bit. All of our locals require house brand. At mine its $15 per hour plus about $14 a box for 9mm. Here its $13 per hour and I can bring my own. I can finally take advantage of case discounts online (and there was much rejoicing). ;D ;D ;D This cuts my shooting bill in half. The only downside is they don't allow hand loads. This doesn't effect me, and honestly seems unenforceable if you keep some factory boxes anyway. Just a nod to the insurance company more than anything. Still, it makes buying all that cheap UAE 5.56 and imported 9mm look worth while. Hell, maybe even a $70 Moisin and a bunch of cheap surplus ammo. ;D

Fantastic FQ.    Shoot Straight has a store in Tampa.   I haven't used their range, but have stopped their twice on my way back from Sarasota from visiting my dad.    Really nice place.  Very large.  Lots of help.  Well stocked.   During the ammo shortage 2 years ago was when I first stopped there.  I mention if it wasn't too expensive I'd like a box of 9mm.  He said $9.99/box, but if I bought a whole case it would only be $8.99!    A WHOLE CASE!  Most stores in Ga didn't even have 1 box.  They had a pallet of 9mm ammo on the floor.  Took home 2 cases that trip and one the next.  (PMC brand)

They also have stores near Orlando, too.
Will work for ammo

How long is the range ?
If it's indoor I'd skip the Mosin, get a Tok and even cheaper surplus ammo  ;D

They also have a new indoor range west on Southern Blvd. Same one? Either way, a new range is a good thing. Especially when they don't gouge you for house brand ammo, and range time.

For indoor pistol stuff, Arizona Gun & Range (15 minutes away) charges the same $13, and you can bring your own ammo. At the fancy dancy ultra modern, high overhead, new range National Armory, it's $20 an hour with your ammo, $15 with house brand ammo. (Which they proudly mark up) :-\

I don't shoot there.

Hey, a new range in Palm Beach County is a good thing.  ;D

Indoor range at Shoot Straight there in Tampa is 100 yards with two lanes.  It's not air conditioned, but the have a nice exhaust fan system so you're getting a pretty good percentage of fresh air.  I've been there a few times and even when it's pretty hot outside, it's not oppressive.

You're going to enjoy the place, Quaker.

And Wyoming Antelope has some longer range set-ups,but they have a large number of pistol ranges, too.  It's all outdoors, and for a long time they wouldn't let you load a magazine in your rifle.   You had to shoot one at a time, reloading each time.  I think that's changed, now.  With a yearly membership, shooting was reasonable, but as a guest, it's something like $20.  FWIW

The real longrange set-up in this area is at the Manatee Rifle and Archery Club--they have a 1000 yard range with a big steel gong at the far end so you can tell when you've hit it.  I've never heard the gong on any of my trips.

When I mentioned long range Rabbit, I just meant that you'd have to shoot pretty far to hit an antelope in Wyoming from down here. ;D Glad to hear the positive vibes about shoot straight though. I'm off to Naples early next week so I'll probably miss the grand opening sales and deals (grumble), but I am looking forward to it. My local, Gator guns is on my last nerve. High prices, idiot clerks, they don't sell AKs because they don't want to deal with "that crowd" (their words, not mine ::) >:(), and prices that make you wonder if its always been 2008. To hell with them. I am driving two exits south and never plan to darken their door again. :D
