thinking AK instead of AR......
« on: March 01, 2008, 07:11:34 PM »
As I wrote in an earlier post I am looking for a tactical rifle. I have been looking at the AR, but with the price of 5.56 ammo I am now leaning toward a tactical AK. I have looked at several different ones. I noticed some said they would take double stack mags. I wasn't aware there was more than one type. With 7.62 ammo being cheaper and a little better stopping power I leaning that way. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Cookie

Personally I really like the Yugo. Heavier receiver.

Yea...researched alot of AK's before buying my YUGO M70ab2...an underfolder...and I agree that it is a very sturdy weapon compared to most.

BTW...ammo prices for both the AK and AR are about the same ( within $20 ) from what I'm seeing in my neck of the world.

AKs are as much of a bulletproof machine as ever made...I was never a huge fan until I went through the foreign weapons class for the Marines at GUNSITE. Hard to argue with a gun that is virtually impossible to break!

The Saigas are really good guns as long as you can live with their nonstandard magazines(though the guns can be modified to take normal ones.) Surefire offers decent aftermarket mags for them now. AK' are just like AR's now with everyone and their brother making railed handguards, stocks. etc. The sky is the limit. The Saiga 308's are a great deal when compared against the other options in 308 battle rifle clones.

If you can find a builder that that has a good rep.  You can have one built just the way you want it.  It would be more money up front but when you got it, it would be what you want.

Anyways that is what I did, as I was new to AK's.  I did not go with a bunch of extra stuff, just a basic well made gun.

I've got a Saiga, just got back from the gun shop, they ordered in the skelton stock for me, HUGE difference in handling, so if you go the Saiga route, get one with the skelton stock...
