Here's something to take some of the wind out of your sails (back to that navy metaphor) Texas is NOT the only independent country to become a state. Most people forget that Hawaii was an independent kingdom until the Queen was overthrown in a coup de tat carried out by American planters who immediately asked to become a Protectorate of the US ( I forget the years but I think Madison was president so it was around 1817).
Also, a section of western new england called the NH land grants, was the subject of court battles and brawls, over whether it belonged to NH, Mass. ,or NY. during colonial times, The British Parliament disavowed Massachusetts claim, but that left NH and NY on the point of armed conflict until NH settlers seized control of the local court system. When the colonies declared their independence this area declared its own Independence as the Green Flag Republic and did not enter the union until the ratification of the constitution, Thats when it took the French name Vert - Mont(Green Mountain) The name was almost immediately shortened to what we know today "Vermont". Oh, the leader of those NH settlers who seized the courts, Ethan Allen, the man who would seize NY's Fort Ticonderoga at the beginning of the Revolution.
