(CNN) -- Pirates targeted the Maersk Alabama, the ship seized in a dramatic operation in the Indian Ocean waters two years ago.

Four suspected pirates approached the ship in a skiff and a hook ladder, the Maersk said in a statement Tuesday.

"The captain followed the appropriate protocol and authorized an embarked security team to fire warning shots in order for the pirates to turn away," the statement said.

Shortly after, the boat took off and the ship was headed to the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa.

The Maersk's hijacking in April 2009 led to a hostage standoff involving Capt. Richard Phillips.

Pirates captured the captain and held him for days in one of the ship's lifeboats.

Navy snipers killed the captors and arrested one of the pirates, who was sentenced last month to more than 30 years in prison.

WARNING SHOTS? REALLY? C'MON,........HOW ABOUT KILL THEM?????

Glad the pirates were repelled,....but I think Schnitt had it right on his show today.

Round up Former Seals, Snipers, Rangers, Commando's,...etc,...Put them on a fast and fortified yacht with long range capabilities, ARM THEM TO THE TEETH, and make it a reality show...

Instead of "Whale Wars",.......Pirate Wars.....Hunter Killer Teams Target Somali Pirates,....Tonight On Nat Geo.....

I'd watch it... 8)

Seriously, if they dispensed with the warning shots. The problem would eventually disappear. ::)

having just sailed with one of these security teams and spoken with one that had been on the Alabama the 2nd time she was attacked, I can only say that what you read in the paper and what actually happened (was reported) is not always the same. I suspect the pirate's boat never made it back to where it came from. U.S. forces arrested 4 pirates a couple days back after they attacked a Japanese vessell, no shots fired. (too bad). will be heading back through that part of the world again in a few weeks, but this time with a twelve man Navy security detail. (and four .50 cal's too)  ;D

Don't like the "warning shots" that are reported.

All it does is let them know they need to look at the next boat coming along.  Passing the threat to the next unprotected vessel should be unacceptable to any operation.

The "warning shot" should be to force any survivors to keep their heads below water after their boat has been shot out from under them.

Warning shots are ROE?

Oops, didn't lead enough.   In the bow instead of across it.   ;)

actually, 'warning shot' = keep it from the liberal media and you won't have to answer any questions about why your life is more important than the poor misguided pirates or go to prison for self defense. these guys shoot to kill. the teams we are using (on the Alabama as well) are retired seals and all combat veterans. feels good to have them with us.

I have no problem with sinking pirates. If it will cause such a problem then just follow the Three S's some else suggested
Shoot
Scuttle
Shut up

Did you see any pirates?
Nope.
Are you sure you didn't see any pirates?
No never saw any.

I have to agree with this. Works well with our wolf management plan too. Shoot, and shut up.

It's not like these pirates have any recourse anyway. What are they gonna do, go tell the U.N. on us?

"It's like this, we were just going to board them and hold them for ransom and the bastards went and sunk our raft. It's not like we were going to HURT anyone with our AK-47s and RPGs. Not like we've done before."

Question for you sea faring folk. Is a harpoon mounted on the deck considered a weapon? Seems that it would be effective in sinking these leaches. Hit them with the harpoon and just connect the end of the line to an anchor, drop it over the side, problem solved.  ;D

I have to agree with this.

As do I. Shoot these bastards wherever they are found. Blow them out of the water, then deny, deny, deny. That is what the Russians do, and they simply don't give a damn what anyone says. When is the last time you ever heard of Putin caring about world opinion? Especially involving something like this?  Bill T.
