There is no such thing as a dangerous weapon. There are only dangerous people.
If there are objects in the room, and you have clothing, you are never defenseless.
Class room ? Have you ever been hit over the head with a text book ? Trust me, it hurts  ;D

Especially if the spine of said book contacts the nasal area.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

I'll have to take your word for it.  I was always accused of just chewing the covers off, and I must have because I can't remember much pain from an assault with a textbook  ;D

I certainly come down on the side of "do the least you have to, but do whatever you NEED to."  I travel constantly. I can't factor in where my feet happen to be when someone decides to try to attack me. Quick Stop in Alabama, 5th Ave in Manhattan or the base of the Eiffel tower.... I'll use the skills/tools at my disposal to defend myself if I need to. The same goes for being in a grocery store, parking lot, bank or school in the town I grew up in.

Of course, I feel the same way in the opposite direction as well.  For example, many people spout off about how Castle Doctrine Laws mean that they "can" shoot someone inside their own home... AFAIAC, there is still a requirement that you NEED to shoot that person because you are protecting yourself or others, regardless of the law.
