Self defense in the classroom...
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:43:42 PM »
Im sure each state is different, but what can a teacher legally do if a student has a weapon and attempts to attack a student or the teacher?

thanks,

If you're attacked, your response should be based on the self-defense laws in your area. How that response--and the tools you may use to implement it--compares with the school's rules and policies is the tough part. If attacked on the street, your right to self-defense may be clear. By being in the classroom, an otherwise legally justified physical response may be inconsistent with the school/department of education policy. Your best bet is to choose up front what's more important: your safety or your job. Choosing in the midst of an incident won't work because too much fur will be flying.

Stay safe,

Mike

I tend to agree with Bulldog on this one. If a weapon is drawn, I automatically assume the intent is to use it, and I will do what is necessary to protect myself or innocents.

You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

Says it all right there!

I am not a professional communicator in this area, so I can stand behind the "know the laws, act within the laws, but do whatever you need to do to survive" (if the law says no guns I will have no guns, if the law says no blades over four inches my blade will be no more than 3.75 inches, etc.)  I have never been in or seen a fair fight, so I am not going to assume that someone coming at me is going to obey the same law I might bind myself to.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
