I would say expect quotes between $3200 and $4500 depending on Manufacture and SEER rating and what Tonnage the unit is rated for.

Mike MC

I can live with that if it gives me new everything. I was hoping to come in with added insulation and a power attic fan for 6K or under.  Bill T.

Say billt, get a cfm, aka cubic feet per minute analysis....very easily done by any contractor, to determine your "ideal" airflow.

There is a ratio, via sq. ft. of the house, and return air, aka make up air, to determine the req's of your house. Generally, the rule "was" get a 1/2 ton higher unit. If there are reg's I'm not aware of,...well, just double check with a few contractors. Your unit, even in the middle of an AZ summer should not run constantly.

Unless you like your house "meat locker" temps,...Remember the 90% condensing furnace will be used minimally. Don't pay extra for it.

I've been very happy with the furnace we now have. In the dead of Winter we leave it off all night. (We both like it cool when we sleep). In the morning it can be as cold as 62 degrees in the house when we wake up. I can raise the house to 72 degrees in less than 15 minutes. Gas furnaces work so much better than Heat Pumps, which is nothing more than a reversible A/C unit. Much cheaper to run as well.  Bill T.

We had to replace our furnace/air handler 4 years ago. Then 2 summers ago the condenser outside choked and died. I replaced it with a 4 ton unit that was compatable with the furnace. The heater is not something we use that often on the Texas gulf coast, but summers (late April to early November) are hell on earth, with 90% humidity. Both units ran about $4700, and are a lot more efficent. It's hard to compare electric rates, because someone played basketball with them a few years back, and it's like comparing apples to watermelons now. I do know that the AC runs a lot less, even on the hottest days.

Replaced our entire system in 2005 (unit and ducting) with a 10 ton unit (can't remember the SEER) for $3500 total price and that also included a 10 year warranty on all parts. Two years ago we had to have a new fan installed because a set-screw had backed out of the squirrel cage fan blade and mangled the housing. Cost for labor was $125.
We have pretty good insulation all around, and decent shade from pecan trees in summer (a big plus). In the heat of July and August it may spike to $250. My electric bill last month was $160.
