Time for a new game show folks - Name That Wardrobe

And the first clue is:

... so garish it looked like a nuclear nova, hurling gobs of orange light off into the universe.  It was ___________ for such a scrawny old rat who smelled of bourbon and deodorant.

 ;D

Try this one. Name the author of these two quotes.
Number 1:

America... just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns and no qualms about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable.

Number 2:

No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.

Hint, the author was a good Libertarian you all know. ;D

And we have a winner! But hey, its not thread drift, its just a game of "name that iconclastic, pro-2A author". And that's wholesome family fun. ;D
