Lost my job today
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:15:55 PM »
I keep hearing that the economy is recovering, but it doesn't seem like it is.  I got laid off today.  My wife got laid off in October and hasn't found a job yet.  So now we're both unemployed.  This is very scary.  Tomorrow I have to pack up all my camera gear and send it back, apply for unemployment (I've never done that before), and start looking for a job.

I'd started planning for the possibility of this last month by enrolling in a gunsmith course (online).  I'm done with the photo industry.  This week I am going to apply at gun shops for retail jobs with the hope of being able to apprentice with their gunsmith.

I'll do what I need to to pay the mortgage and feed the kid.

Just had to get that off my chest.  On the bright side, I'll be able to volunteer at the NRA show next month.

Sorry to hear this BAC!

Doesn't help to hear how great it is, and then this happens.  Hang in there, and I'll be praying for you!

I feel for you.  I've been out for about 2 years.  I've been working at the gun shop for over a year now but the income is significantly lower than what I used to make.  I have had plenty of interviews but most of the companies I have talked to didn't hire anyone.   For a small few I was a finalist but didn't get the job.  There just isn't much expansion going on yet.  There is resistance on the part of companies to expand when so many things are so uncertain.

That being said you really need to keep a positive attitude.

Dude, I can't even imagine.  Keep your chin up, keep your eye on the ball, and thin outside the box (sounds like you're doing all three).

You are in my thoughts and prayers.  And remember, God doesn't close a door without opening a window.

Best of luck, my friend.

As others posted, go after every option, keep your spirits up, and hope you can get right back in the game.

All the best.

The economy sucks, and I know you don't want to hear this, but it is going to get worse.  I drive 65 miles one way to work at a range/gun shop, because there are NO jobs where I live, not even minimum wage.  I feel for you brother, I really do.

Sorry to hear that.

Good luck in the job search. Check out Butler Hospital for a job. May not be what you want but it may help you weather the storm. Monitor Tech is a pretty cushy job and they will give you the training.

Or I can set you up with a low paying, crappy hours baby sitting gig if you want.   :P

Recovery my azz. I haven't had a full time job in 25 months.

I thought this was your job.  ;D

I got laid off in June '09, did not get a job until June '10 - and that was hourly and is due to end this Thursday.

Hang in there, unemployment will help but it will not pay for everything, you may have to cut back some more. Sorry to hear about the bad luck, BAC, it seriously does suck, but other folks have gone through it and come out OK, you will too. Keep your head, be smart, keep your faith (or find it).
