Really, this is a major crime problem in DE?
Here in KY it is a crime not to have a basketball hoop on your property.  ;D

I imagine the complaint was that the pole violated some ordinance about being too close to the street and, no doubt the local government has an easement several feet back from the curb.

So all this is probably legal, but if just goes to show you what happens when you allow government to get it's fingers into your yard.

Your right, but it appears to be rather abitrary in enforcement.

I doubt that hoop has been there for sixty years but the point of the matter is:
The female officer lied to the couple about laying the pole down on their driveway.
The road crew could be cleaning out culverts or filling potholes, a much better use of the labor.
Nobody is chasing me off my front yard and stopping me from speaking my peace.  So arrest me and we will discuss it in court.

I would have left the car parked legally in front of the hoop and called my lawyer.

What next, no street hockey?  No stick ball ? LMAO

Glad to see they're spending the cash to enforce their stupidity.

When I still lived with my parents, the HOA used to put the little notice form on or front door about our hoop.  One time, one of the forms sat there for over an hour before I got a chance to throw it away!

Could you imagine being one of those non cop city workers having to tear all those peoples property down, for no reason other than some f#@% face city politician, who's daddy probably didn't beat them enough, cares more about a power rush than people's property?

Why doesn't the police chief just tell those city politician to take a flying leap?  I know that the Texas State Police have done that when it comes to these compliance laws.

At the beginning it sounded like he said sixty, but when they pulled the pole he said "there goes sixteen years of history."

I went back to the beginning, and with the 16 in mind I couldn't tell which he was saying at the beginning.  I think the 16 is correct.

Edit:

He does say sixty at the beginning, but in the end he says 16.  From the age of the house, the age of he and his wife, and the appearance of the pole I would say 16 years is correct.

I have lived with difficult neighbors before.  I have had neighbors like the one on their corner that filed the complaint to have all those poles removed.  If that area is anything like the neighborhoods I lived in I am willing to bet there is a for sale sign going up in that community tattle tale's front yard very very soon  >:(

Those are usually either young socialites or bitter old people that have decided care free live infringes on their "atmosphere" and/or things like these poles ruin the value of their property/investment.

I would like to see a copy of the letter!

I assume that the comment on Del DOT and the right of way that it has to do with the poles being at the curb to play street ball.  I don't know where all the others were, but at the end of a caldusac (damn spell check works but brain won't fix) what difference does it make if the kids play ball there?  Look at the neighborhood.  Every driveway in the background has a steep slope to it, so the street is the best place to play, and I don't see the danger where this pole is located.

My blood pressure goes right through the roof as I watch and listen to the helplessness of these parents and landowners!  The fact (stated but not disputed by anyone) that they have sent a reply to Del DOT, and they don't get any time for a response or ruling.  Then the cop that deserves a good bitch slapping when he listens to the woman tell the homeowner he can keep the pole, and then does nothing as it is dumped in the back of a truck.

Most cities have no yards. We played tackle football in the street.
