San Diego 6 reports that an attempted holdup at Apple's Otay Ranch retail store in Chula Vista, California went sour this morning, with one of the robbers reportedly having been shot and killed by a mall security guard.

A security guard caught the suspects smashing the glass front doors of the Apple Store at the mall before the mall opened for the day.

The guard reportedly shot a male suspect in the head.
NBC San Diego reports that two other suspects, one of whom had also been shot, have been arrested. The incident happened shortly before 7:00 AM this morning, before the store had opened for business.

Update: 10News reports that approximately 40 shots were exchanged between the security guard and the armed robbers, according to Chula Vista police.

If this guys a Mall Ninja, then I'm all for them!  Forty rounds sounds like a gun fight all right.  But for all we know, this fellow could be a police officer working part time there.

You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

Well, if Mall Ninja had (3) 15 rd. mags. = 45 rds.

"exchanged gunfire" is a broad brush, as the BG's may have only fired twice, the other 38 rds came from Mall Ninja dude,....
bound to hit somethin' ::)

Mall Ninja Creedo,.... ;D
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

While I was in San Diego most of the "mall ninjas" were in fact off duty cops.  Matter of fact the ones at a couple malls their shirts actually say:
  ODP
Off Duty Police
When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

Just as likely the bad dudes open the festivities. Two of them, I'm thinking nobody did a magazine change, say 15 for the Mall Marshal and 25 for Sum Dude and his bro Sumother Dude.

It was three on one.

Burglary suspect dies after shootout with security guard at San Diego County Apple store
By Julie Watson, The Associated Press – 6 hours ago

SAN DIEGO — A private security guard fatally shot a suspect in a smash-and-grab burglary at an Apple store early Monday in what police said was the latest attempt to steal prized electronic gear from the high-end retailer.

Two other suspects were arrested after the driver of the getaway car died from his head wound and the car crashed. The driver's name was not immediately released.

The two passengers ran into a neighbourhood, where police locked down schools for about an hour before the man and woman were found in the courtyard of a condominium complex in Chula Vista.

They were identified as Johnny Chenda, 25, and Melissa Ortiz, 21, and both had prior criminal records, police said.

Chenda is a suspected gang member and convicted felon. He and Ortiz were arrested on suspicion of robbery and other crimes and remained jailed Tuesday, according to the San Diego County sheriff's jail website.

Thieves using everything from sledgehammers to rocks have smashed the glass doors and windows of Apple stores across the country, stealing tens of thousands of dollars in high-tech gear in seconds.

Many of the stores have been hit more than once in only a few months. Some have turned to armed guards such as the one in Chula Vista, after unarmed security failed to intervene when thieves flashed guns.

Chula Vista police investigator Capt. Gary Ficacci said he believes Monday's break-in was the first time someone was killed during an Apple store burglary.

Amy Barney, an Apple spokeswoman, declined to comment, saying local police would be the best source of information.

In Monday's theft, the unidentified armed guard was sitting in his unmarked vehicle when three people pulled up to the store just before 7 a.m., Chula Vista police Chief David Bejarano said.

A woman stayed in the car while two men smashed the store window and went on a free-for-all before the guard — a former San Diego County sheriff's deputy — confronted them.

The guard opened fire inside the store after one man pulled a gun and fired at him, according to a police statement. The store manager took cover during the shooting.

The trio fled in the car but quickly crashed into a nearby light pole, where the driver died from a gunshot wound to the head, Bejarano said. The two others ran away.

Footage from surveillance cameras that captured several Apple burglaries have been posted on YouTube.com and show thieves sprinting into stores and scooping up MacBook Pros that cost as much as $2,500 each.

In Chula Vista, authorities said they were trying to determine if the break-in was connected to any other Apple store burglaries.
