Attack Of The Killer, Monster Tomato. My Backyard Trophy.

Planted German Heirloom, Better Boy, and Beefsteaks, in early Jan.  March ended with a bang, and with some TLC, ended up with a particular "monster".



Took my wife and I two days to finish it off, salads, homemade BLT's, antipasto with garden basil, EV olive oil, red onion, and Parm.  Cheese.

Did some fried green maters, ol' skool.....Buttermilk and Corn Meal, with some cayenne and black pepper in vegetable oil, on the 10" Griswold cast iron skillet. ;D

But alas, my mater season is ending, it actually gets too hot. :-\ but you Northern members should get a plantin'.....with the cost of food this year, we should all be growing something. Even if it's in a clay pot.

Nice tamater. I don't have a garden anymore but my tulips and lillies are growing nicely. My wildflowers should be starting to grow soon. I always have roses in June or late May. That's all I have anymore.

Nice looking 'mater!

Still a bit early to put out here in the Northeast.  We're still getting into the 30's at night.  A couple more weeks I'll visit the garden center and get some transplants started in the courtyard out back.  My neighbor has quite a herb garden as well and offered for me to use whatever I want.

Chives, a couple of different sage, basil, cilantro, rosemary and a few I don't yet recognize.  I agree, to NOT grow something is silly.  Heck, even a planter in a window on the south side of the house will produce quite a bounty.

Dill loves cool/cold, as well as, oregano, thyme, chives and rosemary especially. Herbs can be a lot more hearty than veggies if it's still too cold for veggies. However, Spinach and cilantro/coriander, lettuce, collards, beets and radishes, love cool/cold....as long as they have sun.

I'm jealous!  Our neighbors are all just getting home from Florida, and I still can't see the garden due to the snow.

Wifey's unemployment has brought promises of a full blown garden this year, and I'm looking forward to it!  Nothing like a salad of any kind that includes a fresh mater off the vine and refrigerator pickles on the side  ;D

As for planting, I still have snow on the garden beds. It his 60 today, so it's not long now, but still - SNOW!!

That's one beauty of a 'mater, matey.  Nothing better than an heirloom grown with love and some quality cowsh!t.  Next year, plant 'em downstream from some of these threads and you'll prolly double the size. ;D

Are you keeping your head above water?  I had appointments in your area for today and tomorrow, but every one of them called and warned me to stay away.  None were under water, but they are predicting poor travel in the valley from what I hear.

My biggest concern is that I-29 is open all they way north in three weeks  ;D
