Mexico wants to sue U.S. gun makers

CBS News has learned that the Mexican Government has retained an American law firm to explore filing civil charges against U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors over the flood of guns crossing the border into Mexico.

Sources say Mexico's frustration with U.S. efforts to stop the flow of weapons has pushed them into this novel approach. The law firm is looking at charges that may include civil RICO. The contract was signed on November 2, 2010 by a representative of Mexico's Attorney General, at their Washington embassy.

On November 5, 2010 President Felipe Calderon expressed his frustration to CBS News correspondent Peter Greenberg: "We seized more than 90,000 weapons...I am talking like 50,000 assault weapons, AR-15 machine guns, more than 8,000 grenades and almost 10 million bullets. Amazing figures and according to all those cases, the ones we are able to track, most of these are American weapons."

Wouldn't that be kinda like suing mattress makers for unlawful prostitution?

This really shouldn't go anywhere .  I think we pretty well established the fact that gunmakers are not responsible for the unlawful use of their production in the Lawful Commerce Act of 2005 (I think that's the year).

If anyone should be sued it should be the current administration for countenancing Project Gun Runner.

Sheesh...  I hope we make it to 2012.

I love this line

Richard Feldman, President of the Independent Firearms Association and former gun industry association executive said: "Maybe we should be suing the Mexican government for their failure to prevent drugs from coming into our country."

And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

Crusader's post would be accurate except that he overlloks 2 major facts,
1- the current US administration is more threat to America the the Soviet Union ever was.
2- the record of the current administration, re; Arizona immigration law.

If anyone was still looking for a reason to hate most lawyers and their industry, it is right there in my red highlight!  The only explanation for a law firm to take this case is pure greed!

I sense that this could be a case that would cause the sharks to start ignoring professional courtesy  >:(

Sounds like this would be a U.N. approved way to wage war.

Well, I really doubt the case would go anywhere, but it would be a "Pop Corn" event watching the Feds records of Project Gun Runner being subpoenaed by the defense.

My guess is that the current administration is complicit in Mexico's decision to file the case and it would be enjoyable to watch the administration trying to decide whether to go blind or get hit with contempt of court.

One Houston Gun Show I attended a few years ago had a very ignorant U.S. Congresswoman from a local district send stooges to buy class 3 weapons for cash off the record. She really believed machine guns were sold anonymously by individuals at these events, she may even believe the hand grenades are real. So now the public is expected to believe 90,000 weapons were seized and most of them that were traced came from the U.S. How about we don't mislead people with basically factual but deliberately slanted information. Almost all of these weapons came in to Mexico through their ports and southern border (no need to trace them), many were legally sold to their Military and Police (no need to trace them) and the smallest were civilian legal firearms for the American market (these they traced) smuggled across the border. So Mexico here is my plan, you pay us back for every cost we incur from illegals in our country. You owe us for Medical, Welfare, Education, Law Enforcement and all expenses for rehad of Americans hooked on your drugs and after you start sending the checks we will see what other expenses you have caused us. We may even be able to pay down part of our national debt once we stop propping up your corrupt government.
