Cheap scope for 10/22?

Gunman's post has inspired me.I have dithered for year's about slapping a scope on my 10/22. Is there anything in the $50-$75 range worth looking at? It wil be used on the range and maybe for tree rats. I don't want to buy junk (I'd rather live with the irons), but my eyesight being what it is, if there a cheap piece of glass that will work? I'd like to hear suggestions.

Personally, I'd stay away from the less expensive 20mm "rimfire" scopes.   There are a number of alternatives with larger (read that clearer) objective lenses.   Here's one that I use on my Winchester 77 .22lr



It's a BSA 4X32.  Designed to be rugged for air rifles it provides adjustable objective for shooting a varying ranges.  Especially inside 100 yds which is where most rimfire shooting is done.

You can get it in your price range a places like Optics Planet, MidwayUSA or other on-line retailers.   Maybe even some of the big box stores carry it.

There are other alternatives.

Check out Sportsman's Guide.  They have a number of Barska scopes that are fairly decent at a low price point.

I believe Simmons has a couple under $70.  In the 22 magnum line (I think).

I've got a Tasco 1x4 on one of my Marlin 22's that has worked out well, melon shots on the local squirrel population is the standard I'm using to judge how well it works. I picked mine up at Wallyworld for about $40.

Still have a Bushnell rim fire scope I use on my 10/22.  Very streamlined looking.

Zeroed it at 25ft and it had a range adjustment elevation nob calibrated for .22 LR.

Paced off 100yrd and set one 1" stone atop another 1" stone.

Used a pillow atop my VW 411 as a rest, set the elevation for 100yds, and shot at and hit the top stone.  The bottom stone stayed in place untouched.

Never thought I'd need to do any better than that.

That was before all the increased power .22 rim fire loads were developed, however.

Double that amount and yes you can get something worthwhile.
I have 3 Leupold made Redfield scopes, and they are quiet good, my .444 hasnt managed to shake the shit out of the 2x7. I have a 3x9x40 on my ruger 10/22 charger and another 3x9x40 mildot on my L/A Marlin 39a all perform very well.
Stay away from the cheap chink made crap, not worth the tears.
Another alternative try and find a peep sight to install?

Scopes, as with anything else, you get what you pay for.  You can go to WalMart and see what they have hanging on their pegboard displays, or you can get a quality scope that will last a lifetime.   Leupold makes a quality scope with lifetime warranty, at about $200. in their Rifleman line.  Your grand children will still be able to enjoy it.

Looking for a fixed powewr or variable?
I have heard many good things about the Leupold fixed power, and I believe parralex is set at 60 yards on the fixed sighted one. i know it's probably more than what the price range is from what you stated.

Maybe check out the Weaver rimfires, Burris or perhaps the Nikon prostaff models.  Probably still a little more than you want to pay.

It is. I put serious glass on my hunting and SD rifles. This is just a toy. I don't want the el cheapo narrow tubes. But a Bushnell, BSA or a Simmons or Tasco should do it. I really don't need the light gathering, nitrogen purged bells and whistles that I would insist on in a deer rifle. Thanks for the help and keep them coming.
