Sheriff Dupnik will seek 9th term

TUCSON - News 4 has confirmed Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik will seek his 9th term in office come 2012.


You may remember, Sheriff Dupnik came under heavy criticism for remarks he made at a news conference following the January 8th shootings.

That isn't stopping him from seeking office.

The effort to recall Sheriff Dupnik is ice cold but the fire in his belly has never burned hotter.

"I still feel I have a lot to offer and we have an organization that I am very proud of that I think is very professional," Dupnik says.

Some of his critics say it unprofessional to give his personal views regarding political vitriol in the wake of the shootings.

To that, the Sheriff says, "In spite of the all the criticism at the time, dealing with the media, I still enjoy it, I find it very personally rewarding."

The Republican party is also gearing up for the 2012 election.

They have 3 candidates who have tossed their hat in the ring for the sheriff's race.

Sam Stone of the Pima Co. Republican Party says, "Terry Frederick, Walt Seltzer, and Chester Manning all of whom have law enforcement backgrounds they look like good candidates and I actually expect that we'll have one or two more candidates before this is all over."

Stone says it's not so much the comments Sheriff Dupnik made regarding the January 8th shooting that bothers him, it was talking about the case itself that could become a problem when it went to trial.

"For a law enforcement official to step over that line is a huge error on his part and we're going to have a good candidate up there to call him to task over it," Stone says.

Sheriff Dupnik has been the sheriff since 1980.

Prior to that he was a Major with the Tucson Police Department.

He's been in law enforcement for 53 years.

Now that would be a very interesting "experiment" to have Pima County become the 51st state.

Just watching the result of increasing border security along the rest of the AZ/Mexico border cause Pima to be the path of least resistance would be worth the price of admission.

Then watching the influx of new residents as the rest of AZ started getting tougher on illegal immigrants would be a nice follow up.

Finally watching as they tried to find ways to finance their Paradise with only their own money is something we could enjoy for some time to come.

Personally, anytime a politician is running for his 9th term at anything, I raise an eyebrow.

I know this man and have worked with him. Sometimes you go a little too far and it will get you in the end. He had done some things that were questionable, and he was never called on them. I have been called out on cussing to the public during bar fights, by reputable politicans, because it was thier kids. Yes I told them to shut the F*** up, because that is the only language they speak when they are on a bowl of loud mouth soup. Sorry that was my rant.

CALDWELL, Ohio -- After 36 years of administering his sometimes-controversial brand of justice, Noble County Sheriff Landon T. Smith resigned today amid criminal charges that he allowed his wife, who is a deputy in his office, to misuse a county vehicle.

Smith, a Democrat, was charged with unlawful interest in a public contract, a fourth-degree felony, and a misdemeanor count of conflict of interest after a six-month investigation by the Ohio Ethics Commission. He has agreed to plead guilty to the charges next month, said Delaware County Prosecutor David Yost, who served as special prosecutor in the case.
