I thought Edwards had set a new bar in stupidity by stealing campaign funds to pay off his mistress when he could easily have written a check himself. I was wrong. A guy in the bay area has him beat. Our hero in this tale is a 64 year old hippie ATM repairman. One day he decided that clearly, the problem with the seven machines he serviced was that they were overburdened with cash. His solution? Steal it, to the tune of $200 K. Not the best of plans since you are pretty much going to be the only suspect, but still, a solid haul. However, he decided to cover his tracks. The brilliant plan? Replace the money with photocopies of the aforementioned $200 K. No one will notice right? And surely involving the SS and making it a major federal counterfieting crime rather than simple larceny can't do any damage can it?
FQ13 who wonders what part of "stop digging" these folks fail to uderstand. Sorry I lost the link, but this one is a classic.

But did the bank credit the accounts of folks who got fake money ?
Or did they say they could not prove the ATM handed out the bad imitations ?
Numb nuts probably isn't the only crook here, he's just the one who will go to jail.

The banks will refund the cash. Its all documented, even if folks didn't save their recipts. Failure to do so would result in massive bad press and loss of business as there is always the ATM aroud the corner. Besides, its all insured anyway, it costs them almost nothing to do the right thing, and potentially lot's to do the wrong thing (though corporations are often too stupid to realize that ). Its one of the reasons why being an armed guard for a bank or armored car is a job that no guard  takes seriously (hopefully). Who want's to risk their lfe for some corporation's insured money?

It is not worth it. As a LEO you see stupid things like this and shake your head and walk away amazed that it happens. When I talk to fellow LEOs and they start stories with you will not believe this one. It is usually true.
