Sweet lord, they done got the horses and Rodeo Queens!
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:58:17 PM »
Under the "I swear I'm not making this up category" it seems Rodeo Queens in Utah have to ride Hobby Horses to prevent the spread of Equine Herpes (Damn that Catherine the Great!). Anyway, just when you thought Florida cornered the market on weird? Well, God bless Utah! ;D The fear apparently is the cowgirls transmitting the disease from their clothing to another horse, but there is no mention of men's equestrian events being cancelled, and bull riding is apparently strictly a "don't ask don't tell" situation. ;) One of the little darlings, a Miss Steed (see above for not making this up), did offer insightful commentary, although her parents might not be best pleased. Still, it's a classic worthy of Red or M'lette.

"It will give you experience for if you happen to have a problem like this later in life," Steed said with a smile. "You already have the experience of riding a stick horse!"  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, I guess riding stick horses will get the event and group more press than cancelling it...actually more press than the usual event.

And while they say it "test" the girls knowledge of the course, I think it "tests" their ability to keep a straight face.

Sucks to be the horse with a big patch of herpes on your back!

I've seen drug commercials warning about the spread of herpes.  They specificly point out "herpes of the eye"...   :-\

Made me think, and I can really only come up with one way one might contract "eye herpes"...  I'm guessing (hopeing) primarily a concern for the ladies...

FQ, you keep getting to be a bigger and bigger tool every damn day. And more ignorant.

Equine herpes is a very serious and fatal disease for horses, and there is an outbreak going on in the western states. One way of controlling the spread of the viruses is to keep horses away from each other if they are not from the same stable or ranch.

Rodeo and cutting horses are very expensive, and the last thing someone wants to do is pay $50,000 for a cutting horse or barrel horse, only to have to euthanize it after it gets EHV.

Damn, you are a TOOL!!!!

And as long as Florida has you, they will always have an absolute lock on weird!

I get this Path. But why are the roping, steer wrestling, and bronc riding events still going on? If it were about quaranteening animals, why just focus on the girls events, when as you well know, they are riding the cheapest horses there?
FQ13 who has owned a few horses over the years (one of which I sold to a barrel racer for not so small dollars) and is not so big a tool as you think. I do enjoy irony though.   ;D

No, you're a huge tool.

Rodeos are being cancelled in California and Utah, possibly Nevada too, haven't checked there.  The article states only that the state vet hasn't cancelled any - the promoters are because the people ain't coming with their horses due to the outbreak of EHV.

BTW - the article you provided is about a JUNIOR rodeo queen contest only, not a rodeo or cutting event.

Path, FQ isn't making light of the devastating effects of the disease on horses,  nor was I.

However I do see it as humorous to continue the event on stick horses.

As you said, they are canceling redo events around the western states, which is the wise thing to do.

If they, instead, held the events with the cowboys riding stick  horses chasing little red wagons pulled by the clowns, I'd think that was humorous too.

You might have a point right there!  ;)

Both my daughters and my wife are barrel racers and compete all the time. The reason the club did not call off the event is baecause of entry fees.  They are not going to give up that money.  I've had to deal with some real morons over the years.  Ive seen people win saddles based on participation points and not speed points.  One year a girl didnt race at all but paid her fees and won a buckle. It's all about the money.  I just hope the EHV does not spread this direction.
Give me liberty or I'll get my guns and get it myself.

Its a very big deal out here.

Most of the events are being canceled.   that and they are doing vet checks before they let them on the grounds, then check thier temp every 2 hours.  Its no joke.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.
