Wigger, a shooting legend at the NRA Rifle and Pistol Championships in Camp Perry, Ohio, has been the National Smallbore 3-Position Champion 21 times and National Smallbore Prone Champion eight times. Wigger won his first National Championship in 1963 and still competes to this day.
In addition to his National Championship accomplishments, Wigger is a three-time Olympian, having competed at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, and the 1972 Olympic games in Munich. Wigger’s time at the Munich Olympics netted him two golds and a silver medal.
“Competitive shooting owes a lot to Lones for his contributions to the sport,” said NRA President John C. Sigler. “For the past five decades Lones has been a tremendous ambassador, a National and Olympic Champion, coach, and family man. Most importantly, Lones is a true friend to every competitive shooter in America and a true star within Olympic circles. I can think of no American athlete more deserving of recognition than Lones Wigger.”
