New (for me) Winchester 94 30-30
« on: March 14, 2008, 11:29:02 AM »
Picked this up last night.  Bought it sight unseen with a friend of mine (we went halvers).  I paid 100 for it and it's in my safe ;).

Light pitting on the receiver (It's a 1976 model) but overall good condition with probably less than 20 rounds through it.

Do all Winnies have that stupid safety under the lever?  Can I do anything about it?

Nice one you have there Haz. I am waiting for mine hopefully the Mossberg. I would say you made a good deal on it and it looks fairly good in the pictures.

All the 94's that I've seen have the lever safety.  You're lucky enough to find one old enough not to have that stupid cross bolt safety in front of the hammer.  for a hundred years simple backwoods people figured out how to be safe with the half cock feature, now we need an additional safety to keep some genius from shooting his foot off.

Very good investment.  Both you and the seller.  If I recall, I bought my Marlin 336C in 1978 and they were the same price as the model 94 you have there.  I believe it was $99.00.  Only classics hold their value like that.

Nice buy!

Just the other day I was thinking about missed opportunities.  In the late 70's and early 80's Sears and K-Mart were both running adds for the Winchester 94 for under $100.  The most common prices I remember were the $79.99 and toward the end at $99.99.  For years I have kicked myself for not loading up.  A local guy sold one of his $100 specials on gunbroker for just under $500 just after Winchester announced their plant closing.  Sure he could have done better in some other investments, but how many CD's or Passbooks can you take out and shoot on the weekend.  So far he has only sold one's he has used, and I know he has more than a few still in the box.

Nice score...Hazcat

I picked up a barely used M1894 late last year...private sale from a guy at work, who didn't even own it for a month...and never shot it...who it bought off the original owner, who told him he didn't have a box of ammo through it.

1977 top eject

30WCF

came with two NIT ( new in tube ) 30-30 barrels.

2 boxes of ammo ( 40 rounds... bought by my work buddy )

1/2 box ammo ( 10 rounds... from original owner )

and a BULLDOG soft carry case

$300.00

last four digits of the serial number are :  1111

Haz, Don't remove that part, it keeps the rifle from firing out of battery. What you can do is lighten the spring that holds it down, That will make it so you need less effort to close the lever to fire it.

Majer,

I'll keep that in mind but something has to be done.  I have to choke the crap out of the lever to get it to fire.  No, it is not that the spring is tight it is just that the button is short and very close to the stock.

Instead of me doing it (it looks very easy) I'll talk to my smith about it.  In any case it is a stupid design.  My .454 is every bit as powerful as a 30-30 and it doen't have this 'safety'.
