Dumb movie Gun question?
« on: June 11, 2011, 08:30:10 PM »
I was watching Cobra for the first time in a real long time today, and at the beginning they do this really cool shot of his 1911. I got on Google to search better pics of it to try and figure out what it says on the slide under the ejection port cause I couldnt read it on the TV.

Here is a great Pic of it. http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Cobra

As it says on here it was built by Colt, but what I thought was really cool was the 9mm conversion unit. Has anyone ever seen this and is it like the .22lr conversion unit. In a way I think that it would be awesome to have Government Model shoot both 9mm and .45.

Was this ever a production unit that colt sold or sells?

Here's one for $600. Not sure why you'd want to though. I mean 9mm will save money on the range, but you can buy a lot of .45 WWB for 6 bills.

This one's sold, but contact the seller and they probably help track one down.

FQ beat me to it, I had the same link. Both Colt and Springfield Armory made top-end conversion kits for the 1911. You pretty much have to change out the whole top-end because of extraction issues due to differences in case diameter.
I expect the movie gun is a one-of-a-kind made just for the movie.

There is no real reason besides I Think its cool. Its not so much for money. Its more of a rarity thing that I like with it. I would like to have a dedicated 9mm 1911 but I just cant do it. JMB Made it for .45 lol.

I am a weird guy with my guns.

Yes, and not a "conversion" unit, but actually production models

Mk IV/'70  1970-1984  was available in 9mm, .38Super and .45ACP

Mk IV/'80 1983-present has been also been offered in .40S&W

Will work for ammo

That '50 Merc. in that movie may just be the greatest car I've ever seen!  Of the three they built only one survives and it was stolen from Stalone's storage unit.   :'(

I think what he was getting at was the fact that "9mm Conversion Unit" was stamped into the slide right under the ejection port. And Colt made production models of all those calibers, but they also mad a conversion unit (kit) that contained a slide, barrel, bushing, magazine, springs and such to convert a standard 1911 .45ACP to 9mm and sold them as factory production kits, as in FQ's link. Once the change is made, you could also convert to .38 Super with just a barrel and mag swap.

FWIW

Quote
COLT 9MM SERIES/80 FACTORY CONVERSION KIT.- NEW IN CASE - This is a very rare Colt factory 9mm conversion kit with “9mm Conversion" slide markings, Gold Cup style rib and adjustable sights. It is new in the Colt case with Colt Series/80 manual and Conversion Instructions. It converts the Colt 45 Series/80 Government model to 9mm. Simply change the barrel and magazine to convert to 38Super also. Will not work on Series/70 or non-Colt guns. No FFL Required.

Had one of these, You had to change the ejector as well, the .45 ejector wouldn't hit the 9mm rim. I couldn't get it to run 100% so I sold it off and used the money to buy a Browning HiPower, best thing I ever did.

Yup, a high end JMB pistol, or a conversion kit? Is there even a question? ;)

The ejector should function properly if the pin that holds it in place is removed, just change it when you change calibers.
