Back in the early 60's Barry Goldwater lost the election and he statement that he would use nuclear weapons if needed to defend the US played not a small part in  his defeat.

I was to young to vote, but did vote for him, against Johnson, in our HS mock election.

His slogan was  "In  your heart, you know he is right", and I did believe that...just wish  he  hadn't allowed it to be made a political football.

I sent the following message to the Herman Cain website:

Mr. Cain -

I am looking for your position re' the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. I am essentially a single-issue voter, believing that any candidate for higher office that trusts the American people with possession and use of firearms can in turn be trusted with the welfare of this country.

Sadly, I see nothing on your campaign website concerning your position. Please let me know when you have issued a position or statement.

Maybe I should send him a letter saying how I think that its important for states and localities to have local control in response to local needs. Path and I can compare our responses.

I was head of the Tri-City Republican youth group at that time, and I adored - and still do - Barry. I still have his campaign "action figure" - complete with cowboy hat and heavy black glasses! 

As for the use of his "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" statement as well as the nuke one, remember, at that time Alinsky was an old man. Hell, he may even have been dead. Point is, his disciples were already well-trained and at work.

Again, I get the feeling that answer was not due to a well thought out position.

It was one word, "Yes" in response to a Federal vs State control question that involved firearms.

And again, I will wait for a more formal position statement.  

I am more disappointed in his apparent effort to just say "something" rather than him expressing an anti 2A position.

Better that he would have said he had not reviewed that aspect and would make his opinion clear when he had.

I also feel that his response to the Iran Nuc question was the same type of answer.  I don't think that would stay his plan and I'm more disappointed he gave an statement he hadn't carefully considered.  

Although I am more leery of a Presidential candidate who hasn't been considering how to handle Iran than one who was wafflely on how to handle Fed/State right on the 2A

..............and I too consider myself a one issue voter by the same logic Path expressed....with the addition that if the citizens are well armed, they have a chance to correct a terrible mistake.

Over all, my take is that Cain he is not a well prepared politician.  He has not spent the past several years "playing the DC game" and is being caught off guard by questions his "handlers" haven't prepped him on.....similar to Palin

For that matter every body on this forum should be in favor of "common sense gun laws" instead of the agenda driven mish mash we currently have. I will also point out that you support States making their gun laws every time you vote for preemption or CCW.

he made the statements on the interview with Wolf blitzer  the other night. In his defense I think he is confused about the 2nd amendment. He is a big states right advocate, which I like but he misspeaks about topics he knows little about.
I say give him a chance to clear this up.
