Was at a local gun shop last night and came across a Mossberg "Chainsaw" model, all I could think was WTF were they thinking and why the hell would anyone think a "chainsaw" grip on the pump was a good idea.  Are they nuts or is it just me?

Saw a picture of it and wondered if that grip operated the slide?  Appears that it does.

Obviously made for short range defense against closely packed adversaries since you can't use sights at all...my guess it is aimed at the Zombie Defense League.  I guess it works if you have a pistol grip only shotgun, since you've pretty much given up using the sights and committed to hip shooting.

Reversing the grip and having it at the bottom would be more practical on a standard stock weapon, and more inconvenient, allowing you to retain the weapon under rough action and give a more secure grip of the forearm and still allow sighted shots.

My first thoughts when I read this was how do you aim - or even point shoot.  I thought of how I hold my chainsaw and wondered what this gun looked like.

I found some pictures and a video on line, and my thoughts were confirmed:  This is going to be a very task specific shotgun, and point shooting will take lots of practice.  With a standard pistol grip and the "chainsaw" handle over the top of the barrel the gun has a natural downward cant.

To make this gun more universal I think they should have put a "D" handle high on the back.  They should have gone all the way with the chainsaw theme, and converted the stock and trigger group as well as the pump.

Yep, the grip will run the pump and it was on a pistol grip only gun but I found it clumsy to hold or operate unless the gun was canted 20 to 30 degrees. The thought that ran through my mind was "great now we can shoot shotguns "gangsta" style too".
I'm sure someone, somewhere likes the idea but to me it looked like something dreamed up for the "POV wargames" and "tacticool" crowds.

I think this a case where Dilbert comes to life. The guys in engineering just give up and do what the guys in marketing want. They don't even bother saying "But if we did that you wouldn't...". They just build the thing and call it the Darwinator '11. ;D

I'm sure they'll get a lot of orders from hollywood. It's a natural for zombie movies (and mall ninjas).
