4-H is creating monsters.....monsters I say!!!

Several of you rural guys on here will get a kick outta this:

Does 4-H desensitize kids to killing?

4-H stands for "Head, heart, hands, health" and apparently a fifth - for "haters."

To many, 4-H Clubs are all about nurturing sweet little calves, adorable children winning ribbons, urban garden patches and proud future farmers grooming prized pigs for show. To others, it's a calculated system for turning the youth of America into cold, unfeeling animal killers.

--------snip-------

Here's what our commenters had to say:

In cold blood

I don't and would never support the 4-H. This group helps desensitize youngsters into having no emotional attachment to animals raised for food. For those who say no one should have attachment to animals raised for food, I say "of course". This is how the meat industry stays in business. If children are raised to love all animals and not try to see them as products, they would not be interested in seeing them killed. "Listening to the auctioneer and seeing how excited the children get when their animal is purchased is an incredibly fulfilling experience."

Really? Incredibly fulfilling experience. You mean knowing the animal that trusted you from birth is off to be mistreated before being slaughtered! That's fulfilling? Maybe that's because the 4-H has successfully desensitized these children who may have once be appalled by this. It's simply horrific. Shame on you 4-H for what you do to animals and to children. - Heather King

Apparently Heather is one of those who believes in only buying meat at the grocery store so that no animals will be harmed.  ::)

What? Animals...food....I don't get the connection.
Meat comes from styrofoam trays, how do any animals figure in all this?  ::)

Talk about getting it 180 degrees wrong  ???

4-H and FFA teach youth how to raise and care for their animals, and it gives them first hand experience as to where food comes from and the sacrifices needed to feed us all a healthy diet.

Anyone that thinks it desensitizes them needs to spend some time with these youth as they talk about the values of the animal they have raised, groomed and shown, and as they put them on the truck to go to market.

Did I mention 2010 bride of the year  ;)

OK, maybe I went over the line with that one, but I don't have any of the cattle show photos saved and needed to fill the spot.

Ummmm, My dad took the pig I raised in 4H to the slaughter house and WE ate it...  I made it a point to not think about where the meat came from, but it was good!

Once the show is over, what else are you supposed to do with a freakin giant pig?!?!  It bothered me more thinking about somebody I didn't even know killing her and eating her truth be told.   :-\  I put A LOT of work into that thing!

Former GF actually named - named!! - the 3 buffalo yearlings I bought some years back. Gave the bull and 2 cows each a different name: Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and Belle Starr. I could not believe it, but I called them by name anyhow. Came to know them each very well, very different personalities. And when it came time to butcher them, well, I just . . . .

There isn't a day that passes I don't look at their skulls and know their names from the shape of the horns. Still have some yummy corn-fed buffalo in the freezer, l these many years later.

If ya want good meat, feed 'em marshmallows and maple syrup with their corn...........   ;D

And besides, they're easier to kill if they'll come to ya.  :D  :D  :D
