Massachusetts toddler, man among victims in Pennsylvania shooting

Pennsylvania authorities are on a manhunt for a killer who shot five people at a rural Douglass Township home Saturday night, leaving a Fall River toddler and a Yarmouth man dead and critically injuring three others.

Gregory Erdmann, 2, of Fall River and Joseph Shay, 43, of Yarmouth and New York City were both shot in the head and killed, said Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Kevin R. Steele in a statement.

Three other victims — Gregory’s mother, Kathryn Erdmann, 37, and the home-owners, Paul Shay, 64, and Monica Shay, 58, both of New York City — were hospitalized in critical condition, Steele said.

The killings occurred at 50 Renninger Road in Bechtelsville, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Neighbor Kathy Landis, 51 — who lives about a tenth of a mile from the murder scene — told the Herald there are only seven houses on their dirt road.

“We’ve owned property here for 30 years and we have never had one problem in 30 years,” said Landis in a phone interview.

Paul and Monica Shay had been restoring their property for years, occasionally staying there on weekends, Landis said.

“There’s only two dirt roads in the whole township so we get very little traffic in here whatsoever. The only cars that come in here are from the people who live on the road,” Landis said.

No arrests have been made, and police did not have a description of the shooter, Steele said. None of the surviving victims were able to speak to investigators.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Cops kill suspect in Pennsylvania baby slay case

SWAT team members in Pennsylvania yesterday killed a career criminal suspected of killing a Fall River toddler and Yarmouth man execution style and critically wounding the boy’s mother and two others — while in Fall River, neighbors mourned the death of the youngest victim, who would have turned 3 this month, and prayed for his mother’s recovery.

“To take the life of a child so full of energy and life is inconceivable to me,” said Ronald Johnson, 45, a neighbor of the family in Fall River. “His mother’s going to be devastated, because he was her life.”

“She was very protective of Gregory,” said another neighbor, Jessica Espinola, 26. “He hadn’t even started to talk yet.”

Kathryn Erdmann and her son Gregory of Fall River, and her boyfriend Joseph Shay of Yarmouth were at the suburban Philadelphia vacation home of Shay’s aunt and uncle late Saturday, when Mark Richard Geisenheyner allegedly broke in, bent on revenge over an insurance fraud scheme, authorities said.

“Guess you never thought you’d see me again,” Geisenheyner, 51, allegedly told Paul Shay, according to the accounts of two survivors. He then shot all five people in the head, killing little Gregory and Joseph Shay, prosecutors said.

Geisenheyner and Paul Shay knew each other from a 2006 insurance fraud scheme that involved Shay’s home, said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman. She could not immediately provide details.

On Sunday, Geisenheyner went to the home of a friend he had known in prison and talked for several hours about the slayings, offering details not known to the public, prosecutors said.

When he fell asleep, the friend and a companion sneaked out, calling police just before 5 a.m. Monday. A SWAT team surrounded the house in Trainer, making contact with the armed suspect by cell phone throughout the morning.

“He was determined not to surrender, not to end up in a prison again,” Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green said. “He obviously indicated that he intended to seek revenge against the one victim. There’s no explanation that I’m aware of as to why he would have shot at and killed multiple victims, including a 2-year-old child.”

Yesterday, Erdmann’s neighbors described her as a devoted mother who was studying to become a pharmaceutical technician. She recently began dating Joseph Shay, neighbors said.

To bad they didn't gut shoot the SOB and let him bleed out.

FUBARED is the correct term here. Want to shoot your accomplice who screwed you? Well, I won't condone it, but I'll understand it. Shoot up a house full of innocent people who's last thoughts were probably WTF is going on here? Add to that shooting a child who couldn't identify you because HE WAS TOO YOUNG TO FREAKING TALK, as opposed to leaving him lay and calling 911 from a pay phone? There is a special place in hell waiting for this guy. I just wish he'd been taken alive. I'm sure he'd have made a lot of close friends in prison.
