Search Engines - Who's for us and who's against us
« on: July 06, 2011, 08:31:29 PM »
While we all are familiar with the anti-gun attitudes of PayPal and eBay I got wondering about the search engines.  Specifically about the SHOPPING search engines.

I've pretty much always used Froogle to find items, but I've kinda favored the little guy (Ask.com) from the days when it first started as "Ask Jeeves".  I thought I'd test them and see who is the best specifically for guns.

I used the search phrase "FN FNAR" which meant I was looking for:

And here's what I got.

Froogle/Google:  Lots of dealers and pricing, possibly over 100 sources.
Bing:  19 entries from 6 stores if you set the lower price point to $1,000.
Dogpile:  Doesn't really have shopping.  Their web search did bring up a respectable number of links.

But the one that takes the cake as obviously blocking gun related entries is:

Yahoo:  1 Patio Umbrella, listed twice !

Now I think Google has done a lot with their search engine, and is probably miles ahead of the other companies in their search capabilities.  Not just the amount of data scanned and stored but the intelligence to understand what you're searching for.   In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't mate a profile on me with my search request to bring up mostly guns.  And I bet if my wife searched from her work computer it might bring up slightly different results.

I got to believe though that some engines, especially Yahoo, are  blocking gun related sites.

Anyone else have good/bad experiences?

Amazon.com seems to carry everything except firearms themselves.

While I don't search for guns regularly, Google is my "go to" engine.

We know that they take money from advertisers to list their sites near the top of the list but that's OK.  I generally know where I'm going before I get there so for me, I just go to the company website and move on from there.

Amazon is my "preferred" shopping stop for most everything and has been for a while.  I find what I want browsing and check the price on Amazon, usually get a better deal and I haven't paid for freight on anything in several years.

I use Goodsearch.  They have been good, and I haven't noticed any anti bias.  Besides, they will donate a penny for each search to your chosen charity, provided it is registered with them.  They have firearm organizations on their registry, and if yours isn't they can get registered very easily.

I just did a search for "FN FNAR" on yahoo, and 29 of the first 30 items on the list were firearms related.  Maybe they saw this thread?  ;D

Not just a regular search, but a "shopping" search.    I wouldn't think they'd try to block on a regular search, but when you're trying to find dealers, ah that's seems to be the rub.
