Bolt action .22?
« on: July 13, 2011, 11:21:02 PM »
An acquaintance asked me for a recommendation for a good Bolt Action .22 rifle for him and his kid. The kid is 12 so he doesn't want a youth model, but a full sized rifle. He wants it to target shoot and small game hunt with, so, figure a nickel at 50 yards (minute of squirrel). I know a bit about SA .22s, but I was embarrassed to realized I know bupkiss about bolts. So I said I'd ask here.
Here's the deal. We are looking for a plinker, sporter, hunter, not an olympic target gun. Not el cheapo, but not a ton of money either. Basically, among the usual suspects (Savage, Marlin, Remington etc.) what would you recommend and why?

well  for the cheap, no one beats the out of the box accuracy of the marilns.

Next step up IMO is go with a cz.

after that things get very pricy.

out side of full on target gun, you won't beat the cz at thier pricing.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

Savage Mark II BTVS.  No regrets.   ;)

NOT just a bench gun.  Actually carrys really well.

Does the fact that BTVS22MAG is my email address tell you how much I like this rifle?

Bolt guns don't get fired nearly as much as semiautos. If the ammo price doesn't freak him out, I'd buy another 17HMR in a heartbeat.
Shrink that "nickel at 50 yards" to one hole at 50 - a small hole - and that's with the cheapest Savage.
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

After dealing with magazine feed issues with a couple of otherwise great Remingtons, I decided to go with a Ruger 77/22.  All in all I am pleased, although some other models make be a bit more accurate, it's great to be able to use 10/22 magazines.

I will add - Start with open sights!  Young eyes should be enjoyed and exercised as long as possible.  Way too soon the time will come when optics are required  :'(

Might want to try a Ruger 77/22 very accurate but the Savages are just as accurate, matter of preffrences ,wood vs polymer and price.
