only idiot is the one that gave up his gun.
"Why are you carrying a pistol?  Expecting trouble?"

"No Maam.  If I was expecting trouble, I'd have a rifle."

The kids are at a disadvantage.

All their lives they have "protocol" and "ceremony" drummed into them and it usually stands in the way of their goals.....  Like wash your hands before eating, look both ways before crossing the street...hundreds of them, some with no value other than  to avoid discipline from your instructor.

They learned the protocol for getting the treat and followed it like they know they are supposed to do with instructions from adults.

To the kids the goal was follow the protocol and get a treat.

Maybe if they had been told to find the quickest way to get that treat with the fewest steps, they would have done differently

Just tell them, there's candy in there, and leave the room.   ;D

You know, that does fit the video.

Your statement made me think of the chimps.....notice they were behind bars the whole time?

That is because their first action would have been to destroy the box and get the treat.

The chimps only resort to a "logical" approach when the direct approach is impossible.

The kids, on the other hand, were allowed close contact with the box because their "conditioning" would prevent them from taking that direct approach and trashing the box, the same way it would not allow them to cut the ceremony and go right for the payoff.

And you are right....the kids would probably bash the box if they were left alone and told there was candy in it.

Remember the story of Alexander and the Gordian knot ?
Alexander the Great was shown this fancy, intricate knot, and told that according to legend, or prochecy, who ever could undo it would rule the known world. Being a practical sort, and not much for ritual, Alexander said "Cool", 3whipped out his sword and chopped it.  ;D
