Ramblings from Alf for the weekend
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:22:02 PM »
Well, it's been a busy weekend.   Now if you don't want to read the sordid details of my weekend then just move on.   This isn't the post you want.....try "motivational posters".

Friday, went to the indoor range and seriously worked on two drills.  First was 6" and 8" plates (paper ones) at 11 yds with the Glock.  This should help with plates in general and GSSF matches in particular.  I paint 2 "plates" on a sheet of paper and alternate left and right.   It's not the same as the real thing, but it's what I got.   After shooting 42 rounds at 6" ones, the 8" seemed so big.

Then I worked on my DA revolver skills.   I've got a NRA instructor who will sign off on the Distinguished Expert program.  Everyone at the range is doing it with a .22..........what if I did it with a full power .357 revolver?   .22 was easy.  Out of 6 tries all were above the minimum score with one perfect (200 points).  While nobody else would know, it's a personal thing.  To say I did it with a revolver and full power loads would be a point of pride (God forgive me for I sin so easily).    Anyway I ran through the test 4 times with my 686 and barely scored in the 140s.  (you need 3 runs at 145 and 3 runs at 170).  For those who don't know you need 5 shots strong hand-one hand, 5 strong hand two hands, 5 weak hand-one hand, and 5 weak hand two hands on a D2 (AP2) target at 7.5yds.  10 seconds for each run.   On my final 20 rounds I decided to do it all weak handed for practice.   10 with one hand and 10 with two.  Scored 163!!!  So it's doable, had 10 of the shots been strong hand I surely could have done 170.

Went to load some "real" .44Mag loads Saturday.  I've loaded some "quasi" loads 10grs of Power Pistol under 240gr JHP.   But this time I was going to use H110.  Something in the 20+gr area.     I kept backing out the powder measure and backing out and backing out.  Got to 17grs and then.....poof..........the powder measure insert fell out.   Powder all over the place.    CLEAN UP......RTFM.   The pistol measure measures up to about...............(wait for it)................................17grs.   Now I know that varies based on the density of the powder but with H110 that was it......17grs.   I ordered the "rifle" measure insert (which came today-thank you MidwayUSA).  Because powder was everywhere I totally disassembled the measure and cleaned it.    Lesson learned.

As some of you know, my big concern with progressive presses isn't powder, but primers.  I occasionally forget to seat the new primer.    I check myself by carefully counting the cases.  Then if I'm a case short over the 100 primers, I know I missed one.  Also the loose powder on the shell plate is a real clue.    So I want two things.  One some type of signal to tell me if I've gone through the "seating" motion, and I want a counter of some sort.   I know how to do both of these things, so I ordered some of the parts today.  First, I'll put a micro switch at the bottom of the stroke that only gets activated when you prime a shell.  It will light a green LED.   But that LED won't reset until you get to the top of the stroke.  This verifies that I haven't forgotten to TRY to prime the shell.   Then the lower switch will also activate an electronic counter module.  I've tried counting in my head but it is terribly unreliable.   These two items will make me feel much better about my priming.   Pictures when I get it all assembled.

Finally, I built a bookshelf for my #3 son.  His wife's birthday is in December so she never gets a real birthday.  Sunday he had a "half" birthday party for her.  It was a "surprise" party.   She had an eye on a particular bookshelf she wanted so son and I built it.  I mean why pay Ikea $100+ when we can botch it up for the same amount.    Only difference is we built if for horizontal stress instead of vertical.  The choice of wood was his.  I'd use double sanded 3/4 ply myself.   Anyway it turned out real nice.  I applied wood putty and sanded it on Saturday and she was really surprised and please.  Pictures below.

That's the news from here for the weekend.  Going downstairs now to install the new powder measure insert and load some "maanly man" loads.

This is actually the back side.   The front has fewer knots.  See below.

Not that anybody as actually read my weekend rants, but here's an update.

I was so flustered at backing out my powder measure insert and spilling powder that I totally forgot the measure had shipped with both the pistol and rifle rotors.   Hornady reminded me today.  DUH.

Nice job on the shelf there "Old Man"!

Did one similar about ten years ago for my wife to fill a cutout between the LR and the kitchen...biscuits and glue for the most part!  Still around here somewhere!

Now, get the picture of your DIL off the internet before some douche bag downloads it!

I actually read it, Alf, but was headed out and couldn't comment earlier. Nice work on the shelving.

**You reminded me that as soon as the weather cools off, I have to build a bookcase to match the entertainment center the wife and I built a few years back. I have always liked wood-working about as much as metal-working. Of course it now takes me about three times as long to do projects (due to some limitations) but I get them done, thanks to my wife being a top-notch assistant.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
