Don't like the diamonds on the grip though.

The grips are my only bitch. I think it would look better with the wood grips the standard model comes with. It would add a bit of contrasting color. I can't tell if those grips are dark wood or plastic.

Saw one at a gunshow in Michigan last weekend and it had just been sold. That dealer sold four at that show and that was the last one he brought with him that day.

My observation over the years has been that how quickly dealers get new products seems to be how much business the various dealers do with what distributors.  I've talked to some dealers that can't seem to be able to get some products and other dealers that get them in a day or two or even have the item in stock.  One dealer I know likes one particular distributor over others because he gets free shipping even though it may take a little longer than other distributors.  On one of the forums I visit, there is a dealer that seems to get and offer new products almost as soon as they are announced, and he gets a bit of a premium for them.  Another dealer I know has a sales rep at one of the premier distributors that really is on the ball and gets new products to him fairly quickly.  I've seen other dealers that are lazy and won't even try getting something if their perfered distributor doesn't have it in stock.

A lot of this is also determined by how many other, slower moving guns the dealer is willing to be "baited" into taking. For example in order to get say half a dozen Ruger 1911's in, they may have to agree to take a dozen slower moving models in at reduced cost. Smith & Wesson started this in the early 70's when S&W Model 29 sales skyrocketed after the film "Dirty Harry" came out. Smith would require a dealer to take several slower moving models just to be able to get one Model 29.

Smaller dealers with little inventory could not afford to do this, so they rarely had the Model 29 in stock. When the larger dealers did agree to this, S&W looked the other way, and pretty much allowed the dealer to scalp off the Model 29 for whatever price they could get. It was not at all uncommon to see new S&W 29's going for over $400.00 back then. At the time the gun listed for $183.00.

Nice post BillT, and very accurate. I used to work at a high end outfitters shop  (Patagonia, North Face etc.). They all played the same game, and who can blame them? You reward your loyal customers, but if you can make them take some crap with their steak?  Well why not? Unfortunately that hurts the little guy, and gives us more Gander Mountains and fewer "Bubba's Guns".

Your point about scalping is also dead on. There is a word for the guy who is first in line for a new product. That word is sucker. Patience young Jedi, the price will go down, and if you wait long enough, someone else will also do your beta testing free of charge. Not that Ruger would ever have a recall or anything.....
