State lawmakers: Cities can’t ban guns in parks, town halls
A new state law means that scores of local gun rules have to be repealed by Oct. 1.

Do handguns belong in South Florida’s parks and recreation centers and city halls?

They do according to the Florida Legislature.

Under a new law that takes effect Oct. 1, all of the state’s cities and counties must repeal local rules limiting gun ownership. Although the state has claimed sole right to regulate firearms since 1987, this year’s new law adds fines for local officials who fail to comply, and gives gun owners a right to sue for damages if they believe their rights have been violated.

Though the initial bill suggested a fine of $5 million, the final legislation lowered the amount to $5,000.

The result: Local leaders have begun to comply, cancelling laws that kept guns out of parks and community buildings, and taking down signs warning visitors not to bring firearms to such places.

The law highlights differences between those Floridians who see guns as tools of criminals and those who see them as sporting goods, tools of self-defense or symbols of freedom.

“This probably passed because of someone from the NRA, someone who doesn’t care about urban conditions,” said Aaron Campbell, vice mayor of Miami Gardens, where last week a young couple was fatally shot while filling up at a gas station. “It’s sad that a piece of legislation can pass like this.”

Now the only restrictions on concealed weapons are those approved by the Legislature. Guns still aren’t allowed in schools or bars. They may be brought into government buildings, although an exception allows them to be excluded while a city council, school board or county commission is meeting.

Private businesses still get to decide whether to allow guns inside.

“You’re not going to have every Tom, Dick and Harry carrying a firearm on their person up and down the streets and into buildings because it’s a felony” unless the person has a license to carry a concealed weapon, said longtime National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer. “Only close to a million people in the state are licensed to carry concealed.”

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

Oh my god ! There will be blood in the streets !
The dems up here tried to use the same lame BS to prevent carry in the State house.
In NH you can carry in all State offices.

Oct. 1,,,,,the slaughter of innocents begin..... ;)  Those evil law abiding CCW permit holders,....(approx 1million)....

FQ may bash our Gov. Rick Scott,...but unlike the RINO Charlie Crist,....we're getting some real meat and potato pro gun legislation on the books.

Open carry waffled thanks to some RINO's and whiny Libs,  but SB 234 did pass as well as HR 519. Florida remains a gun friendly state.

Whiny Mayors, City/County Councils, etc,.. that want to "modify" state gun laws, can no longer get away with it.

We just need ranges longer than 105yds... :-\

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

I need to send this to the State Legislators here in ND. We cannot carry in ANY public building, which include rest stops on the freeways (where one could argue you need it most), city halls, airports, County Buildings, sporting event, church, or any "public gathering".

And this is by STATE law.

Does letting mayors modify state law count ?
Just pointing out you would not need this new law if the last guy had stomped on them.

And Jeb Bush and Lawton Chiles before him. Believe me, I am aware of this local preemption BS. In my county the local sherriff (who will not approve any type of class III permit) has insisted on a blatantly illegal 5 five day wait on long guns. No one has had the the stones or money to take him to court over it, and so its been policy for years. >:( Whoever ssaid sheriffs are our last best hope hasn't met this asshat.

They can't get to high office if they can't get to low ones to start.
You realize don't you, that blaming your problems on others is another liberal trait ?
By the way, every one I know who has moved to Fla is either a good conservative, or dodging the law, both of those groups bitch about the liberal locals and the Haitians.
