Applebee's Diner Shoots Mugger
Twice in less than a week, a St. Petersburg resident has shot an armed suspect during an attempted robbery.
ST. PETERSBURG – An armed suspect wearing a ski mask who tried to rob a woman outside the Applebee's Restaurant Sunday was shot by her boyfriend.
Anthony Hauser, 17, was shot four times by Raven Smith of St. Petersburg, and is hospitalized in serious condition at Bayfront Medical Center, police said.
Smith, 35, has a pemit to carry a concelaed weapon, police said Monday, and acted in self defense.
The shooting marks the second time in four days when an armed robbery is thwarted by a citizen. In both cases, the suspect was shot by the victim's boyfriend who observed the crime.
According to St. Petersburg Police, Smith and his girl friend, Lesley Tanner, 27, had parked their car in the Applebee's Restaurant parking lot, at 4700 4th St. North. They were preparing to go inside to get dinner at about 10:30 p.m.
Tanner first got out of the car and walked to the rear of the vehicle, where she was approached by Hauser, who wore a ski mask and drew a gun.
As Smith got out of the vehicle on the driver's side, he saw the suspect pointing a gun at Tanner. Smith drew his 380-caliber handgun, police said.
He fired at Hauser, striking him four times. Hauser yelled at Smith to stop shooting. He pulled the mask off his face and claimed the gun he was holding was a "fake."
Police said later that Hauser's handgun was a loaded, 25-caliber automatic.
After the shooting, Smith flagged down an officer passing in the area, and Hauser was transported to Bayfront Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive.
No charges are pending against Smith. Smith and Tanner reside in north St. Petersburg.
Hauser, a St. Petersburg resident, will be charged with two counts of Attempted Armed Robbery.
The attempted robbery is the second time in less than a week when an armed robber has been shot by a victim in St. Petersburg.
On Friday, an ATM robber who had pulled a gun on a woman at the Regions Bank walkup teller was surprised by the victim's boyfriend, who jumped out of a vehicle and wrestled him to the ground. The suspect was shot with his own gun.
Almedin Muratovic faces two counts of Attempted Armed Robbery and one charge of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He is hospitalized at Bayfront Medical Center.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo
For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
