There actually has been quite a bit of research done on the subject over the years.
One of the things that has been learned is that while firearms may function in shallow depths, they are badly effected by the increased weight of the water in the barrel at greater depths.

I have a friend who used to shoot the Soldier of Fortune match way back when. He's told us stories about shooting his 1911 underwater in the hotel pool. He said everything functioned ok just looked like it was in slow motion.

Yes he is. And he still manages to kick my a$$ every time we go shooting.

One of these days he'll be blind and crippled enough for me to beat him.  ;D

Was told you could put special spring cups on a Glock Firing Pin Assembly and it could fire after being in the water while taking a Glock Armorer Class. They also mentioned that they are illegal.  :(

Limited Availability-Fits All Glock Models Maritime/Marine Spring Cups enable your Glock to shoot underwater and under hostile environmental conditions. They ensure that even with water and or debris inside your Glocks firing pin channel your Glock pistol will fire! Great for those who prefer a Glock for predators on shore as well as in the water. Glock will only sell this item to law enforcement agencies and the military with an official purchase letter on agency letterhead. We have them in stock for a limited time. This is the one item that is specified by teams that are on the tip of the spear! These are called the million dollar parts. Because if you loose one your pistol is worthless. So it's worth a million bucks to have a spare set. These parts work on all Glocks-1 size fits all!

I don't know if they are "illegal to own" or if the Big G only sells them to LEO agencies and Military due to liability issues.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
