1911 = 45 caliber handgun

Sons of Guns puts sub titles in to explain to the non-gun public what something is.  Moments ago Will trashed a knife that fires the blade they built for a customer.  He then told him that if he wants something that shoots they are going to make a 1911 (should be interesting to see their rendition of a 1911), and the subtitle informed us that the 1911 = a 45 caliber handgun.

I thought they made 1911's in .22lr, 9 mm, .40 S&W, .45 acp, .38 supper, and I'm sure I'm missing one or two.

Wouldn't it have been nice if they had said "The 1911 is the world's most popular and longest continuous production semi-automatic handgun on the market."

I was well into my 20's before I ever heard it called anything but a ".45" a  .45 Auto", a"Colt, .45" or a "Government Model .45"
Using the military designation seems to be something fairly new and the above versions are what most people are aware of.

All they were saying is that when they (or I) say 1911, it inferrs it will be in .45ACP.







As others have said, it's heretical to chamber it in any other caliber anyway.

I think you are correct.   

1911 means a .45 automatic pistol

a 9mm 1911 means a 9mm automatic pistol.

I think the Lord uses slightly heavier artillery. Just ask the Egyptians. ;)

Fairly plain jane, no frills 1911.
