Bond barrel: 9mm, .45, or .357?
« on: August 18, 2011, 02:23:15 AM »
I bought another Bond. Path gives me hell about buyer's remorse. Let me tell you its nothing compared to seller's remorse. :-X I traded my Bond away over a year ago and have missed it ever since. I found a deal on one on Gunbroker when I was buying my mags and I won (sound of cheering and me doing the snoopy dance ;D). Its in .45/.410 which is not my preffered option as .45 colt ain't exactly cheap nor are there a ton of good SD rounds. However, the shotgun part ought to be a fun little range toy. God does occasionally love gunowners though, and this month Bond has a sale. They'll give me half off a new barrel with purchase of a gun, even used. Very cool of them. (For those who don't know, Bonds are modular like the TC Contenders. Buy the gun and you have about a dozen different calibers that you can add on later).

So here's the question. What caliber? I thought about 9mm as that's what I cary in my normal gun so it would be the same box of ammo. But 9mm out of such a short barrel seems a tad anemic if you can get bigger. This has me looking at .357 and .45 acp as choices. Thoughts among the three?

I'd got with the .45ACP.    Large caliber, readily available and  small form factor.  With the shorter COAL, you get more rifled barrel for any given length of barrel.
Will work for ammo

I have barrels in .45 Colt and .357 Mag,If  were to get another I would go with 9m.m. with a +P+ loading, that would make up for the short barrel

I'd go with the .357 since you have the 38 option, ammo is cheap and easily available and a rimmed cartridge will be easier to extract.

FQ, if you ever went to the WPB gun show, Georgia Arms, has top shelf, new brass .45 colt 225 gr Hornady JHP's, for about $25-30 for 50 rds.

if it can handle or is rated for +P or +P+ that's good, the recoil factor will be snappy, but so will the other calibers...

Short barrel, reduced bullet speed, at least have a larger caliber. .357 or .45, IMHO.

Seller's remorse - I know the feeling, had the same problem as I was literally handing the Marlin 336RC (1952 vintage, almost NIB) to its new owner a few years back.

And only you would gin up a controversy over a damn derringer!  ;D Here, sonny, here's what you do. Keep it as is. You're not going to plink with it, so the .45Colt ammo cost is relative. Besides, you can get those awesome new Winchester (?) PDX rounds with the flying saucers and large pellets for the .410 side. Should be more than adequate for SD.

Funny thing Path, I talked to the Bond guys before I posted. Let me state for the record that I have never met a more honest or Christian company in my life. These guys were for real. They said that accuracy suffered with the .45/.410. If I wanted accuracy from .45, buy the dedicated .45 barrels. As far as SD, two guys indicated .357 in 3.5". The range? 10 yards. Option B, use the .410 but choose Federal 000 buck and screw the the fancy stuff. Honest men, and nice guys. Its nice to find a company where the employees own and like the product and want you to like it too.
