Stats show first decline in new licenses since '02

TAMPA - When President Obama first took office, gun license applications and firearm sales skyrocketed over fears of a crackdown on guns. But statistics provided by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services show that gun boom may now be on the decline.
The so called “Obama boom” is well documented. In Florida, from’08-‘09, the number of concealed weapon or firearm licenses issued rose by 23% from the previous year. In ‘09-‘10, the number exploded again, this time by an additional 41%. The year before President Obama took office, 85,937 Floridians were issued new concealed gun licenses. In his second year in office, that number was 175,555.
However, that trend appears to be changing. In ’10-’11, the number of concealed weapon licenses fell 30%, from the all-time high of 175,555 to 123,759. That’s the first decline in licenses issued since 2002.

Despite the decline, store owners say firearms are still far more popular than they were just four or five years ago. Statistics show twice as many Floridians are getting concealed weapons licenses compared with just four years ago (123,759 in ’10-’11, compared to 66,078 in ’06-’07).

Patrick says some of his customers have expressed fear that President Obama would restrict gun rights if he wins a second term. He thinks a win for Obama could spark a renewed interest in firearms.
“If he gets a 2nd term, he could cause another boom,” Patrick said.

1 in 5 license holders in Florida are women. Gun store owners report more women buying firearms, often for self-defense.
“Five years ago, they were maybe, 2% to 4%. Now, the number is about 18%. Women are the biggest growing group,” Patrick said.
Florida gun owners also tend to be older. 47% of Florida concealed weapon license holders are 51 or older. People age 21-35 make up the smallest group of license holders (18%).
