I read the Iliad and the Oddessy  (f*cking Spellcheck letting me down  here )   for fun, and did a Book report on Solzhenityn's "Gulag Archipelago" , all 3 volumes   
I'd stay up till 3 AM reading, cram to get the homework done, then skip school the next day cuz you have to sleep sometime.

Over achiever!  But seriously what would poses a young man to do such things and then become a machinist?

What is this "Dukes of Hazzard" you talk about?  I have never heard of such things?  But I suddenly have the urge to go buy a '69 Charger, paint it orange, drive like I used to and start shooting compound bows with lit dynamite taped to the arrows.  I swear I could draw that car blindfolded and I can't draw.  My first car was a '70 Roadrunner with a 383 4-speed, same motor Cooter checked the oil on....  miss that car...

My summer job, and then after the Marines, was logging and building with my Dad.
Factory work was awesome, warm in the winter, dry in the rain.

Those are the same reasons I became a machinist but instead of logging I was working in Environmental Clean-up, burning dirt.

The icing on the cake was that from 13 - 24 the old bas*ard never gave me a raise.
So I wound up at T/C for $.50 cents an hour less   
That changed after the first 60 days though

Sounds like my grandpa.  My dad and uncle, 16 & 15,worked with him logging up in Montana for an entire summer for 4 pairs of pants, shirts, underwear and socks.  That was the last year they worked for him, 1961-I think.

I started out scrubbing toilets at the trade school I attended until one of the instructors found out and he made a call.  $8.50/hour in 1995 working in the Deburr dept, better than scrubbing toilets anyday, especially in the Auto shop!  Just because you look like a greasy gorilla doesn't mean you don't have to aim!
