Often the ignorant news media reports what ignorant police officers tell them. I've had some success in correcting and educating both police officers and newsies, who mis-report gun related stories. Most commonly is the mis-use of the term "assault weapon." I've been able to get on-air corrections to some stories in the Portland Oregon area.
Most cops are not "gun guys" and are familiar only with the pistol on their hip. The larger the PD, the more likely the Public Information Officer is a seat-polisher who hasn't worked the streets for years.
Next time you see a story that gets it wrong, contact the PD and the news and politely inform them of their mistake. It helps if you can provide some evidence of your knowledge base. It's what
Tom Gresham calls the "No shrug" policy for his Truth Squad. Don't simply shrug it off as a "dumb" reporter, but make an effort to educate them. It won't always work, but is worth the effort.
