Interesting observations, with pics. SBR related...
« on: October 27, 2011, 11:11:40 AM »
So I just finished cleaning some toys to put back in the safe after a weekend of fun. I don't want to drift to a range report, I'll do that in another post but I will say the 300 blackout exceeded my expectations. I took out my SBR 300, my MSAR-STG556 and my work in progress homemade Savage LH .308 scout rifle. My purpose in this is to show why I love a well designed bullpup. You can see in the pictures below that the overall length of my 16" STG-556 is almost identical to my 9" 300 blackout. Oh how I wish someone would make a 300 blackout barrel for the STG. I ran right at 500 flawless rounds through my STG over the last couple days. Every time I take that rifle out I love it more. It's become my go-to hog destroyer. I especially love the fact that it fits in my dresser drawer. I put 200 rounds through the blackout to start breaking it in. I hope to put up a range report later today, time permitting.

The Savage started out as a regular synthetic stock LH bolt model I've had for about 12 years. It was my regular deer rifle for most of that time. I stared out by having the barrel shortened to 16" and threaded. I've added a POF muzzle brake, a self applied Florida swamp camo job, a 3rd sling swivel and a YHM rail with a 2X Vortex Sparq. I'm really happy with the project, next step is going to be a ching sling and some type of Iron sights. A detachable mag kit is on my want list as well but I need to justify the $300+ first. I can actually load the thing pretty fast as is. I originally planned to put on a regular scout scope and just put the Vortex on temporarily since I had it in a drawer but I really like it. I may switch out to the 3X Burris sight but not even sure about that. It's been a fun project that I've put very little money into.

They're definitely slower, I'm sure with more practice they'd be better but I don't want to mess up my "regular" mag change motor skills by working for speed to much with them. With 42 round mags it isn't quite as much of an issue though. I think the biggest issue is you sort of open up your body to do a quicker change so in a real firefight you could potentially expose more of yourself from cover.

How is the trigger on the STG?

I keep thinking that a trigger linkage of near a foot can't be doing good things?

A lot of inertia just to get it moving it would seem plus the possibility of lots of drag along the way, maybe some flex...

I guess a good design could be able to reduce those issues.

Question for you bafsu.

I have the POF multi-cal lower. Will a 300 Blackout upper, with mags work?

It is now my lightweight no accessory 5.56, but between the 6.8's how does the 300 measure up?

Thanks

For the .330BLK, the only thing you need to change on the 5.56 AR is the barrel. That's it. There is a thread of the .300BLK that has people posting ballistics info - it is aweome indeed.

Yep, any 5.56/.223 mag will work. The 300 is just a 5.56 case necked up to .30 cal. That's the first benefit over 6.5/6.8. You get full magazine capacity since the case is no bigger. You also don't have to change your bolt. As far as ballistics it's far superior to 6.8 and the only advantage 6.5 may have is in the 400yd plus range but I don't even know if I buy that. There is already more, and cheaper factory ammo for the 300 and it has full Remington factory support. AAC isn't charging anyone royalties, it's an open source design so it should blow the other alternative calibers away.

There really is no downside to it that I can find. I'm buying 125gr factory loads for $12.95 for a box of 20 and they are devastating. I shot a hog this weekend from the back of a Jeep at about 25yds. I had the downward angle of the height of the Jeep standing on the seat and using the rollbar for support. The round entered right on the spine directly above the rear hips. It came out at the chest/chin/jaw blowing about a 10" exit and taking the bottom jaw off completely. It wasn't a huge hog but it traveled about 19" and destroyed most of the spine and just about all the internal organs. I've never seen anything like it short of one I shot a couple years ago with a 308 and 150gr Barnes X from like 10 yards. This was still more impressive since there was a lot more bone involved. I had some gnarly shots on hogs with the Grendel but that was mostly soft tissue damage. I've never seen a spinal column just destroyed like this before.

The trigger is not to bad, not match grade by any means but just as good as most factory AR triggers. maybe a little more creep or takeup but not enough to notice.

So I might have to build up a new AR.   I think I'll put this off for a while though.  Got other things on the burner.

Very neat though.  Hopefully it'll continue to increase in popularity.
